In Spring 2024, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) hit their highest Belonging score on the Panorama Survey, with 5 middle schools in the 99th percentile nationally and reducing suspensions by 15% compared to last year. We're proud to support the 20 Becoming Pilot Schools are showing what’s possible with a commitment to the Science of Learning and Development, with stronger improvements in Belonging, Attendance, and Behavior compared to non-Pilot Schools. As we add 6 more Pilot Schools, here’s to an even better 2024-25! 💪✨ #DCPS #StudentSuccess #Belonging #Innovation #BackToSchool
As we welcome back our District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) students this week, we celebrate a year of great progress, particularly with our focus on learning environments full of Safety and Belonging that unlock student potential. In Spring 2024, we had the highest Belonging score ever on our 6-12th grade Panorama Education Survey--including 5 middle schools that were in the 99th PERCENTILE NATIONALLY (!!) for urban middle schools--and our 3rd-5th graders increased as well. We also reduced Out of School Suspension days by 15% compared to 2022-23. The 20 DCPS Becoming Pilot Schools implementing Core Practices aligned with the Science of Learning and Development are showing what's possible when school communities commit to improving adult practices. Compared to non-Pilot Schools, Becoming Pilot Schools showed a: 1. Stronger increase in Belonging 2. Stronger increase in In-Seat Attendance 3. Stronger decrease in Chronic Absenteeism 4. Stronger decrease in Out of School Suspensions per 100 students 5. Stronger decrease in the most serious infractions And this summer we added 6 more Pilot Schools and launched the 2023-24 work at our Becoming Summer Institute. We also prioritized supporting students at the margins at our districtwide Culture Institute, invested in holistic, tiered supports at our MTSS Leads Institute, and welcomed new educators from all over the country to learn about the local, racial, and educational history of DC--supporting more than 500 educators! Huge shoutout to everyone who made this summer possible as we head into an even better 2024-25! Shelley Anderson Hannah Sheen Jung Karen Lee Bode Aking Heather Kurtz Danielle B. High-impact tutoring is driving significant academic growth in District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) schools, and Ed Fund is proud to support this work thanks to our partnership with CityTutor DC at Hart, Jefferson, and Ida B. Wells Middle Schools. Through targeted interventions, students are gaining confidence and achieving major progress in ELA and math. As we look to expand HIT programs, we’re committed to building on these successes with a focus on consistency and high-quality curricula and tutoring experiences. Together, we’re creating lasting impact for DC students. #HighImpactTutoring #StudentSuccess #CityTutorDC
CityTutor DC is excited to share that our data partner, EmpowerK12, has determined that DC students who receive HIT achieve stronger outcomes when compared to their peers who did not receive tutoring. Notably: ✅Students in second, third, and fourth grade who received 900+ minutes of tutoring in literacy, gained the equivalent of 12 additional instructional days. ✅Across all grades in math, students who received 900+ minutes of tutoring, demonstrated growth equivalent to 13 additional instructional days. ✅And, if math tutoring happens all school year and a student receives 1800+ minutes, they grow academically as if they’d attended 22 additional days of school! The bottom line is: when tutoring programs are implemented with fidelity, students make outsized growth. American University School of Education, GW Honey W. Building a sense of belonging in schools is more than just a goal—it's a game changer for students' short-term success and long-term well-being. DCPS has achieved its highest-ever belonging scores on the Panorama Education Survey this year, and Ed Fund is proud to support the DCPS Becoming team in driving this impactful work! Read more about the powerful benefits of belonging in The 74 Media's article.
Great article from The 74 Media highlighting the importance of building a sense of belonging in school: "In the short term, it improves attendance, grades and graduation rates. Long-term benefits are observable even 20 years later, including lower rates of drug abuse, mental health problems and involvement in violence, either as victims or perpetrators." Cultivating a sense of safety and belonging is a huge priority for District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and DC Public Education Fund - because educators, leaders, and families can see the impact of students' needs being met in their classrooms. And it's working! In Spring 2024, DCPS had the highest belonging score ever on the 6-12th grade Panorama Education Survey, taken by DCPS students. Kudos to the DCPS Becoming team for spearheading this work. Onwards and upwards!
