In this weeks Journal Club, Megan Marinus  shared the following with the team:  Another potential functionality of bovine lactoferrin identified and described in this recent nature publication! The article highlights that bovine lactoferrin (bLf) inhibits malaria parasite growth by binding to heme and blocking the formation of hemozoin. Hemozoin formation is a crucial step in parasite survival. bLF also degrades existing hemozoin which is a unique function not seen in current antimalarials like chloroquine. In mouse models, bLF reduced parasite growth, with its C-lobe domain being particularly effective at inhibiting hemozoin formation.
