I was asked today "What is the most common mistake you see early stage founders make?" There are two and I can't separate them on importance. #1 knowing the right time to grow out of founder-led sales Early founder sales are driven by unscalable practices, such as relationships, promising deeply customized versions of product, engineering product for a nuanced use-case, discounting.... Often the first $1-2M revenue is scrappy, no defined ICP, customer's don't look the same, using for different outcomes with varying degrees of value created. This doesn't stop founders hiring though. Yet, it should! Almost always, hiring GTM/sales hires before nailing ICP, before reaching repeatability on the type of customer you're serving & the outcomes you're delivering and before building tested playbooks for GTM teams, will lead to painful execution failure. It could take 12 months before you realize it. The cost of losing 12 months and having to re-hire/do the work to ready-yourself to hire again is massive. #2 Hiring people unfit for your stage of growth Founders index more towards hiring smart people than the stage they have experience in. The problem here is the people you hire can't see in front of them and have no comprehension of what's ahead or how to successfully navigate the journey you're about to go on. If you're at $1M revenue and want to grow to $3M over the next 12 months, you need to hire people that have been on that exact journey. Not someone that's spent their time in a scale up from $7-10M, nor someone that's been in a scrappy startup with $500k revenue. Avoid these two mistakes and scaling should become much easier and faster. #founder #saas #CEO #Hiring
