  • Perplexity released DeepSeek-R1 1776, an updated version of a model originally developed for China. This new version removes the political censorship built into the original, making it more useful outside China. The fine-tuning process involved removing blocks on politically sensitive content by training the model on curated question-answer pairs. Despite the modifications, performance on key benchmarks remained nearly identical. Learn more in The Batch: https://hubs.la/Q03cwZXf0

Senior AI Developer Advocate @ MongoDB

DeepLearning.AI's AI Dev conference last week was probably my best talk and conference experience to date. It was truly a practitioner's conference and it reflected in the main talks as well as the "hallway" track. ⭐ While this was already enough to make it a great experience, interacting with Andrew Ng and having him within hearing distance of me doing my talk was absolutely surreal. Like many others, I started my machine learning journey by taking Andrew's free online courses. From that to this feels like a full circle moment. This conference also made me reflect on my past year as a Developer Advocate. While this role can feel a bit thankless, given how often we put ourselves out there and make ourselves vulnerable to any and all sorts of comments and feedback, days like these make this job so rewarding and worth it! ✨ I'm so grateful to Richmond Alake, Matt Asay, and Shane McAllister for making this possible, to Toni Bird for documenting this wonderful day, and for the kind folks in the audience who cheered me on and snapped me out of my nervousness when I opened my talk with the above anecdote. Safe to say, I'll be back at this conference!
