DTRA’s annual Radiation Detection Field Training Exercise (FTX) at United States Military Academy at West Point for cadets majoring in nuclear engineering. The Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering at the United States Military Academy (USMA) conducts this event, in which cadets locate radiation sources hidden within USMA’s field training sites. It serves the dual purpose of teaching cadets about RN search capabilities and TTPs, while also providing feedback for DTRA on developmental systems. DTRA’s Nuclear Science and Engineering Research Center (NSERC) has directly supported this FTX for more than a decade, most notably by providing radiation detection equipment and coordinating external FTX support from DoD and interagency partners. This year additionally involved participation from RD’s Interactions of Ionizing Radiation with Matter University Research Alliance (IIRM-URA), of which USMA is an active member. Cadets were able to utilize several cutting-edge technologies, including RD-NTD’s virtual training source and a full set of detectors equipped with both Tactical Assault Kit (TAK) and the CBRN plugins. They met and interacted with the Army 20th CBRNE Nuclear Disablement Team (NDT) and the NYPD Chemical, Ordnance, Biological, and Radiological Awareness (COBRA) Team. Meanwhile, DTRA participants had the opportunity to engage directly with future warfighters, learning from how they approach a CWMD challenge. This discrete event is just one vignette, among many, of DTRA Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) outreach activities that support the Agency’s broader talent management initiatives. I can’t think of a more direct and impactful way to engage our future CWMD leaders.
From 14-18 Oct, 2024, DTRA conducted an arms control subject matter expert (SME) exchange with the Korea Arms Control Verification Agency (KAVA) to strengthen the Republic of Korea’s future arms control capacity and to foster cooperation and interoperability between the agencies. The exchange enhanced KAVA’s knowledge on conventional arms control treaty inspections. This collaboration has a rich history, rooted in the 1992 North-South (N-S) Joint Declaration on Korean Peninsula denuclearization and was recently codified in a new Technical Arrangement between #DTRA and #KAVA, which committed to conduct bilateral training and education activities. DTRA’s mission is to #DETERPREVENTPREVAIL against weapons of mass destruction and these types of exchanges aid in fostering international collaboration and building capacity to address future verification challenges in conventional arms control.
