Why say “Latine” instead of “Hispanic”? 💬 Language evolves, and so do the ways we honor identity. The word ‘Hispanic’ often ties us to colonial histories, while 'Latine' reflects a more inclusive, gender-neutral, and culturally diverse term that remedies historical injustices. #LanguageMatters #IdentityMatters

About us
Define American is a narrative change organization that uses the power of narrative to humanize conversations about immigrants in media. Our advocacy within the news, entertainment, and digital media is creating an America where everyone belongs. We’ve been recognized by Fast Company as one of the most innovative companies in the world for causing a stir by leveraging the power of television networks to make the world more equitable and for reshaping American public opinion. We humanize the conversation on immigration through television consulting, original content development and production, media advocacy, and live events. Define American has consulted on more than 45 films and television projects, such as Grey’s Anatomy and Superstore, spanning networks like ABC and NBC and streaming platforms such as Netflix and Hulu.

Media has enormous power to shape public attitudes and beliefs. It informs the way we behave, the choices we make, and how we view others around us. Misinformation spurs extremism and hate, leading to real-world violence. For immigrants and people of color, the consequences can be deadly. Let's commit to standing against Islamophobia and all forms of hate. #EndIslamophobia #StandAgainstHate

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 lives were lost, and among them were immigrants who came to the U.S. in search of better opportunities for themselves and their families. Today, we honor the memory of all who perished by celebrating the diversity of their lives and the contributions they brought to this country. 🕊️ If you're in NYC, visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum for stories and more! #Remember911 #ImmigrantStories

In 1965, Larry Itliong and the AWOC led 1,000 Filipino workers to strike against Delano grape growers, demanding fair wages and union rights. When farmers tried to divide them, Itliong joined forces with Cesar Chavez, uniting their efforts to form the United Farm Workers Union. This is what #ImmigrantPower looks like. 💪✨

On this #WorldPhotographyDay, we honor the powerful portraits captured at Ellis Island between 1902 to 1913. These images, recently digitized by The New York Public Library, offer a glimpse into the diverse faces of some 12 million people who passed through the island. From a Guadeloupean woman to an Albanian soldier, each portrait tells a unique story of hope, resilience, and the pursuit of the American dream. 📸 🌍 #ImmigrantStories

At Define American, we believe in the power of ethical storytelling. That's why we’ve partnered with Pittsburgh, PA-based nonprofit newsroom PublicSource to create "Talking to Journalists: What You Need to Know," a resource designed to help immigrant interviewees understand the journalistic process, their rights, and potential risks. Journalists can now access this easy-to-use guide to ensure their reporting is responsible and respectful, particularly when engaging with immigrant communities. We hope this tool will become a staple in newsrooms across the country, fostering greater trust and transparency in journalism. This resource is available in multiple languages – with more to come – and is free to use. We encourage journalists, news organizations, and community advocates to download and share it widely. Together, let's continue to elevate stories that matter while protecting those who share them.
