Imagine breaking gender boundaries twice. Willy de Bruyn did it! In 1934, de Bruyn became the women's world champion, but the International Olympic Committee, regarded as cycling’s governing body, did not recognize the women’s events at the time. (The U.C.I. did not recognize women’s cycling until 1958!) De Bruyn left cycling at the age of 22 to undergo gender transition and travel the world with his wife.
