⏰ In a race against time to save the endangered Colombian black oak tree, scientists think the tree’s fungal partners could hold the key to saving this species from the brink of extinction. These trees (and most land plants) partner with belowground fungi to get the nutrients they need. Mycorrhizal fungi produce enzymes that unlock nutrients from tropical soils and pass them along to trees. But despite the huge role they play in the rainforest’s biodiversity, most tropical fungi species are unknown to science! A group of scientists led by Adriana Corrales traveled to the rainforest in Huila, Colombia, to discover which fungi species live in the soil and how they interact with the black oak trees.
