  • Emergency Medicine Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Spotlight Anna Stacy, MD, (they/them) PGY3 EM MSH/Elmhurst Resident. Coming from a non-traditional medical background as an actor and educator, Dr. Stacy’s passion is in extending compassionate, competent care to all peoples through the emergency department as the frontlines of public health. Dr. Stacy speaks English, Spanish, and French, as well as some Korean and American Sign Language (ASL), which proves useful when working clinically at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst Emergency Department. Their background in communications and anthropology has made them a passionate advocate for intercultural competence, including the respectful use of interpreter services and culture-specific models to understand disease and illness. As a queer, non-binary Korean-American physician, Dr. Stacy says “I am no stranger to the hurdles faced by those who don’t fit the mold. My identities as an actor, writer, graphic designer, scientist, and teacher, have helped me extend the best possible care to our patients.” Currently, Dr. Stacy is the course director for “Pulse Check”, a core curriculum session for third-year medical students that aims to establish self-care as a necessary step in the process of resuscitation. This class will be further developed at the Harvard-Macy Institute’s Program for Future Academic Clinician-Educators this winter. Dr. Stacy completed their medical degree at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai after graduating from Brown University, where they studied Anthropology and Theatre Arts. Before attending Icahn Mount Sinai, Anna trained in classical acting at Shakespeare and Company in Lenox, MA, then worked as a museum exhibit copywriter. While at Icahn Mount Sinai, Anna was a student director and clinic manager for the Mount Sinai Human Rights Program, an Access-to-Care Manager for the East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership (EHHOP) which is the student-run free clinic, and a leadership board member for the New York Emergency Medicine Student Council. Outside of the hospital, Anna performed in over 30 professional theatrical productions during medical school and worked on both sides of the camera on several film projects. As a writer, they published several works of short fiction in journals such as Calyx and Carve as well as personal essays in Intima and Academic Emergency Medicine. Anna is an Artistic Associate at Eastline Theatre. In 2022, Dr. Stacy was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and received the Judith and Nathan Kase Humanities in Medicine Prize for their involvement in the arts alongside their medical career. Anna plans to continue to center mindfulness in medical education as their career unfolds. Contact Dr. Stacy: anna.stacy@mountsinai.org

  • Spotlight on Women in Emergency Medicine Mitali Thakore, MPH, CHES, CSSBB, is a Senior Process Improvement Manager for Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai. In this role, Mitali leads the Project Team in supporting the strategic development of the Department of Emergency Medicine through supportive project management and process improvement methodologies. Since joining Mount Sinai in 2019, Mitali has aimed to support team growth, by cultivating environments where people find joy and fulfillment in their work. Mitali says “As a first-generation queer Indian woman, I embrace the power of intersectionality, understanding that our histories and identities shape our experiences and the way we lead. Our strength lies in our ability to tap into our full complexity. My hope is to inspire others to step into leadership not by being perfect, but by embracing their unique stories and the collective strength we bring when we support one another. This same belief in the power of diverse perspectives drives my passion for process improvement and project management.” Through cross-functional collaboration and teaching, Mitali helps transform team challenges into opportunities for excellence. For example, to address Your Voice Counts feedback from 2023, Mitali supported the creation of a Nursing Documentation Committee, which is actively identifying opportunities to optimize and align nursing practice across sites. Mitali has been sharing her leadership methodology at conferences including the HANYS Healthcare Innovation and Lean Network: Fundamentals of Strategic Planning, American Society for Quality Lean Six Sigma Conference: Creating Cross Functional Project Management and Process Improvement Teams for Organizational Success, and The Jackson Laboratory-The Whole Scientist series: Project Management Simplified. Mitali completed her undergraduate studies in Medical Anthropology at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University. After college, Mitali conducted ethnographic research on the experiences of individuals with Post-Polio Syndrome in India as a Fulbright Scholar. She has obtained a Masters in Public Health from Emory University and is an ASQ certified Six Sigma Black Belt. She is currently pursuing her DrPH at Rutgers University. • Emergency Medicine Researcher Spotlight Leah Habersham MD MBA MLIS MSCR FACOG FASAM, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, and Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science, is a physician-scientist whose research focuses on improving equitable care for pregnant and parenting people with substance use disorders (SUDs). Her work addresses the systemic disparities that disproportionately affect Black and Hispanic maternal populations in NYC. As a Bronx native, Black female, and daughter of addiction, her lived experience enriches her research, enabling her to lead projects that target vulnerable maternal populations with culturally sensitive interventions. Dr. Habersham is a member of the Mount Sinai Center for Research on Emerging Substances, Poisoning, Overdose and New Discoveries (RESPOND Center), through which she conducts innovative research on racial bias in substance use screening and testing during pregnancy. Her research has found disproportionate biased screening practices for substance use amongst maternal populations, which has been known to lead to increased child protective services (CPS) reports and unnecessary family separations. Dr. Habersham’s ongoing work is aimed at reducing inequities through systemic interventions. In her role as the Director of the Bridge Program at Mount Sinai, an integrated clinic providing women’s healthcare including obstetrics and gynecology, along with addiction care, Dr. Habersham leads a team that is pioneering the integration of the SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) model into prenatal care settings, which aims to improve early identification and management of SUDs. The clinic primarily serves diverse and underserved populations, ensuring that these communities receive compassionate, specialized, and equitable treatment. Dr. Habersham’s ongoing funded research and projects includes the EMPOWERS project; a state-level pilot-funded initiative to develop a Continuing Medical Education (CME) module to train providers on addressing OSUDs in maternal care settings, the Smart Screening and Decision Support project; integrating Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) into Mount Sinai’s prenatal and postpartum clinics to streamline screening for OSUDs, and the Evaluation of the Basic Obstetric Assessment Screen (BOAS) initiative; which has shown promising results in the reduction of racial and socioeconomic inequities in toxicology testing during pregnancy after implementing an institutional-level SBIRT framework. Dr. Habersham says her primary goal is to “eliminate stigma and disparities in maternal addiction care while improving maternal, infant, and child outcomes.” Learn more about the Bridge Program Program: https://lnkd.in/ecsWkTYH Learn more about Dr. Habersham: https://lnkd.in/eY_JQ_Bt Contact Dr. Habersham: Leah.Habersham@mountsinai.org
