The Department of Geosciences focuses on the nature, genesis, and history of the Earth. UTPB's department investigates the structure of the Earth, its sedimentary cover, the environment, and major changes that have affected life through time. The department encourages students to investigate how earth processes have shaped the economic value of the Permian Basin. We also encourage interdisciplinary studies both within the geosciences and through other departments and programs.

Happy National Intern Day! UTPB undergraduate geology senior Rosendo Saldana and graduate geology senior Alonso Alzua are both working as interns at Diamondback Energy this summer ⚙️ Alzua is working as a geophysicist helping asset geologists and reservoir engineers understand earth subsurface properties to find and produce hydrocarbons efficiently. Saldana’s summer project at Diamondback integrates geology, petrophysics, operations, and data analytics to refine targeting and be predictive for future wells to drill. “Being able to interact and collaborate with many geologists and engineers, because everyone has their door open, is what makes the work environment at Diamondback so great,” said Saldana. Congratulations Trinity! We look forward to having you continue your research in the coming years.
This academic year has been extremely successful for me. I presented my undergraduate reasearch at the 7th Annual Geoscience Symposium which was hosted by UTPB. My research was focused in the Yola Basin in Nigeria, and aimed to classify a known basin wide event known as the Pediastrum (a fossilized green algae) Bio-acme event! The results were amazing and I look forward to future research ventures! Special thanks to Mohamed Zobaa who was my mentor through the research and is truly an amazing person to work with! I have the honor of presenting my poster at the North American Paleontolgy Convention in Ann Arbor, and look forward to meeting others and networking! I will post the poster soon on research gate so everyone can get the scoop!
