  • “Climate change knows no borders and neither should our thinking and our shared sense of urgency. By recognizing these are shared challenges we can all reach and exceed our environmental targets.” This was the core message of Director Brian Hanlon's closing remarks at the October 22 Green Transition Summit, sponsored by the Sweden-US Green Transition Initiative. Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) Director Richard Jackson and Deputy Director of Urban Sustainability Administration Maribeth DeLorenzo spoke at a panel earlier in the day. A Navy Yard project by Redbrick LMD was also featured at the event. Hanlon noted that thanks to Mayor Muriel Bowser’s leadership, the District has forward-looking energy policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; is encouraging innovation, efficiency, and resilience; and is securing millions of dollars in federal funding. One focus of DOB involves working with partners to adapt the building codes to focus more on green building practices. While some building owners may perceive this as an economic liability, Hanlon emphasized it is win – win for everyone, because a more efficient building has lower operating costs and helps the District reach our sustainability goals. In closing, Hanlon noted that progress cannot be made alone. It needs strong leadership like that of our mayor; strong partners like our federal government; and great working partnerships with our sister agencies, the building industry, and the community. “Our ability to talk about solutions and technologies not just today—but every day—will help provide a more sustainable future for the District, U.S., Sweden—and the entire world,” he said.

  • Thanks to action from DOB, a legal settlement between Foster House, 801 Rhode Island Avenue NW, and the DC Office of the Attorney General (OAG) will preserve the housing affordability of nearly 80 units and pay $1.65 million to tenants and the District. DOB had cited the property owner for serious housing code violations that were not abated on a timely basis. DOB seeks to ensure landlords obey District law requiring them to provide properties that are in safe, habitable, and livable condition. Through inspections, notices, and associated fines, DOB has worked to get property owners to fix tens of thousands of identified issues. We are currently working to proactively reach out to high-violation property owners to push them back into compliance, which is quicker and better than lengthy litigation. We even have an Alternative Resolution Team dedicated to helping achieve case resolution. As with Foster House, in persistent cases of uncooperative property owners, DOB consults with partners such as OAG on additional enhanced enforcement. Ultimately, our goal is for property owners to work with DOB to abate violations and resolve problems for tenants as quickly as possible. We encourage District tenants to report any suspected housing and property maintenance violations to us at dob.dc.gov or 202-671-3500 so we can schedule an inspection as soon as possible.
