Grace Ling 🐰 and I had a great time partnering with Daryl Png and Emily Fang as we came up with an event that would bring the global Asian audience of SXSW to an event where we could share stories and ideas. We had friends join us from Austin to Australia as we all shared how we can show up for each other and help truly make our community global yet intimate. Special shout out to Chris Do who shared his own story of my rooms like this are so special in ways that they carry context above the content of the event. It’s absolutely wild that Dovetail’s conference headliner includes a CEO with a documented history of stealing from the design community. I can easily think of more deserving speakers like Ruby Pryor, Amy Santee, Linn Vizard, Michael Riddering, Lex Roman, and Filippos Protogeridis. The latter 3 have also been victims of Felix’s theft over the years. While Felix recently sent out a PR-oriented apology email, it conveniently ignored the core issues: 1. Repeated content theft over the span of years 2. Dodging reimbursements from volunteers for months 3. Instructing employees & volunteers to steal other websites’ designs including from Maven, Airbnb, and Databricks Instead, he’s misrepresented it as: 1. ‘Not explicitly acknowledging the contributions of others’ and ‘cutting corners’ 2. ‘Not offering top-of-market salaries’ 3. Unfair attacks against the broader community of mentors and volunteers Many of the complaints are coming from former employees and volunteers so casting them as attacks against the mentorship community is disingenuous. If Felix would like to make amends, he could pay for the stolen works that enriched him to the tune of 150k+ followers, and afforded him many paid speaking engagements including this one. None of this is new; Felix has always been aware of complaints from his own volunteers and content creators that his actions amounted to theft. The only reason he’s responding now is due to a sizable group of mentors quitting the platform. If you are a speaker or attendee of the Insight Out conference, please ask Dovetail to do the right thing and not platform someone who is an ethical and reputational liability. It’s disappointing to see a major design platform plagiarizing and mistreating volunteers and employees. I once admired them for creating opportunities for designers to connect with more senior professionals and learn from their experiences. Going forward, we should work together to support each other instead of stealing from and mistreating each other. We, as designers, thrive on collaboration, proper attribution, and mutual respect. SXSW has been so lit omg. It’s been almost a year since I quit my corporate job and I’d never thought I’d be speaking here I made so many amazing friends here.
