Detroit Homecoming is this week! Join us on Friday, September 20th for “The Future is Talent”, beginning at 11:40 a.m. I’ll be chatting with leaders from across the state on the work to prepare homegrown talent for jobs of the future, and the effort—on entrepreneurship, place, educational and economic opportunity, and more—to retain talent right here in Michigan. Excited to chat with: Heidi Magyar, Executive Lead of Community and Social Impact and GM Heritage Operations at General Motors Santa J. Ono, President of University of Michigan Sydney R., former intern at Urban Science Our moderator, Leslie Green, Assistant Managing Editor - Special Projects at Crain's Detroit Business I myself am a boomerang. In 2018, I moved back to Michigan, not because of nostalgia but because I’m betting on Michigan’s future. If you're a Detroit “expat,” welcome home! Our growth strategy here has always been retention-first and centered on the feedback on 11K+ Michiganders—and counting! I can't wait to share this community's hard work and incredible momentum with Detroiters from across the country later this week! As we gear up for another memorable Detroit Homecoming, we are honored to have City of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, as a featured speaker again this year. His leadership and vision have been instrumental in the city’s revitalization, and we’re eager to hear his insights on the ongoing transformation and the future of Detroit. He plans to share ideas for expats to reconnect and reinvest in the City. Mayor Duggan is always rated as our #1 speaker. He's on the docket first thing Thursday morning at the beautiful McGregor Memorial Conference Center on Wayne State's campus. Make sure to mark your calendars! You won’t want to miss it! Thursday's Detroit Homecoming features a conversation with two rising stars – one on screen and one in the business world – who have collaborated to become social entrepreneurs and angel investors and have made a strategic decision to invest in the City of Detroit.  Nia Batts is the managing director & COO of Union Heritage, one of the nation’s leading minority-owned, diversified investment management companies. She is also a general partner of its venture arm, Union Heritage Ventures; the only majority African-American owned, and majority women-owned venture capital firm in the state of Michigan. Sophia Bush is an American actress, activist, entrepreneur, and investor. Sophia is a member of the Directors Guild of America and has starred in various independent projects, shows and movies such as the hit comedy John Tucker Must Die, Incredibles 2, The CW’s hit drama One Tree Hill, and starred as Detective Erin Lindsay for 4 seasons on Dick Wolf’s Chicago PD. In 2020, Sophia appeared in NBC’s drama This is Us and joined the cast of Hulu’s, Love, Victor, playing Veronica. Sophia can currently be seen starring in the CBS drama, Good Sam, as Dr. Sam Griffith. As an investor, Sophia was an early angel investor in companies such as Uber, Seed, Dirty Lemon, CrowdRise, StyleSeat, Better Battery Co., AllVoices, Detroit Blows, Bev and Genexa. She is also an investor and co-owner of LA-based women’s soccer club, Angel City FC. And in 2021, she joined Union Heritage Venture Partners as a general partner. The duo, alongside Billie Jean King and Allyson Felix, serve as strategic advisors to First Women’s Bank; a first-of-its-kind, purpose driven bank with a mission to grow the economy and advance the role of women within it. The Bank is the only women-founded, women-owned and women-led commercial bank in the country with a strategic focus on serving the women’s economy. Are you an expat? Good News! Shane Battier is launching a branch of the Battier Take Charge Foundation he co-founded with his wife and fellow Detroit-area expat Heidi. The local partner is University Prep Science & Math High School, part of University Prep Schools network. Program engages teens in ways to enhance college opportunities - and helps with scholarship and support once a teen heads off to college. So far, their foundation has hit $3 million in scholarships and programming in Miami -- where he was part of two NBA championship Miami Heat teams and in Camden, N.J. Shane attended Detroit Homecoming II and regrets a schedule conflict prevents him attending this year. But with this expansion of the Take Charge Foundation programming, we suspect we'll see more of Heidi and Shane in "the D."

One of the most exciting panels this year is sure to be on Friday morning at Michigan Central when Roger Ehrenberg, managing partner, Eberg Capital, Trevor Lauer, vice chairman and group president, DTE Energy, and John W. Rogers, Jr. chairman, co-CEO, and chief investment officer, Ariel Investments kick off the morning. They'll discuss how savvy investors look at Detroit and investment opportunities and why they put their dollars in the city. From climate migration to the growing ecosystem of talent and energy, they'll delve into what's driving their motivation. Michigan has one of the most aggressive regulatory goals for conversion to renewable energy. How should Detroit attract investors?  Can't wait for this panel! Are you an expat? I'm super excited to be participating in Detroit Homecoming along with legends Trevor Lauer and John W. Rogers, Jr. and talking about Detroit's bright future. We're all deeply engaged and invested in Detroit's success, and I have never been more proud of my heritage as a Detroit Original! I have a deeply held thesis related to climate migration and the inevitable boom of the Great Lakes States, and view our work in Detroit as building the "operating system" for how to drive community-focused investment in smart, energy-efficient, fun and exciting ways.
