For Martin Delonis, his new work location at Michigan Central Station in Detroit is more than just an office. It’s part of his family history. “Seventy-two years ago, my grandfather walked in here for the first time to work,” he said. “Now I get to do the same thing.” Delonis’ grandfather, Patrick Hackett, worked as a railroad attorney for 50 years and was based inside the train station from the early-1950s until the late-1970s. He was even inducted into the Michigan Transportation Hall of Honor. Delonis, who works in strategy for Ford’s Model e division, said his family text thread “blew up” in 2018 when news broke on Ford’s purchase of Michigan Central Station and its plans for a 30-acre innovation campus. He and his family have since taken tours of the renovated building, and he takes great pride in working for the company that has restored the once-dilapidated structure. “It was breathtaking for me and my family. To see the majesty of it, the scope and scale of it, it was just a bit mind-blowing.” Delonis joined Ford in 2013 and has held a variety of roles in product and customer strategy since. He currently focuses on customer adoption strategy. He says he came to Ford in part because of the thought and understanding the company puts into its products and services, as well as other initiatives it takes on, which was reflected in the restoration of an iconic Detroit landmark. “The people I’ve talked to all said it was like déjà vu,” he said “It’s not just there – it’s shined up and polished. It was incredible to see them taken back to the stories they remember from the past. It’s going to be neat to welcome another generation.” Would you like to be part of history by creating the future? The New York Times is telling the world about the future of innovation being forged at Michigan Central! The paper highlighted three of the 122 visionary startups at Newlab at Michigan Central that are pushing the boundaries of mobility and technology. These companies represent the type of ideas coming out of Detroit that are looking to change the world. David Medina Álvarez, founder of LIVAQ, is reimagining off-road mobility with his electric all-terrain vehicle, the EQUAD. David plans to scale production to 2,000 of his four-wheelers annually, bringing a fresh perspective on sustainable adventure vehicles. With lithium-ion batteries becoming ever present in our daily lives, former Detroit firefighter Ron Butler’s Energy Safety Storage Products International (ESSPI) is working to make them safer by preventing lithium-ion battery fires.
