Discipline, aspiration, & revision are psychological habits that lead to great outcomes. Described as “divine discontent” in this article by Céline N., these habits and attitudes of continuous improvement & a growth mindset result in improving one’s craft, whatever that is. About us
Devine Propulsion provides a sounding board and thought partnership for leaders involved in environmental decision-making. In a neutral, confidential, and independent atmosphere leaders are supported to challenge their thinking and make decisions that solve tangible problems. Learning how to engage in conflict, & not just how to resolve it, is important. When did you last think about *how* you're approaching conflict? Olympian friendly competition teaches us ways to make creative conflict into a productive, future-focused force. We may not always see the outcome we fight for, but we can vow to struggle together with love, humility, & a sense of internationalism & humanity. By finding inspiration from & giving support to new generations of scholars, activists, athletes, & citizens, & by comprehending the connections between passion, excellence, and community-building, we live out Olympic values today. And we need those values, as we need peace with justice, to face a beautiful new tomorrow. Thanks to Matt Meyer, Secretary-General, INTERNATIONAL PEACE RESEARCH ASSOCIATION for the text above from the linked inspiring Olympic speech at the 2024 UNESCO Conference on International Olympic Education, Sport, and Peace reported by the International Science Council https://lnkd.in/eCqfH6dA #olympics2024 #justiceandpeace #leadership #confictresolution #decisionsthatmatter

Any complex issue, like responding to climate change, involves developing social consensus to be effective. Once you accept that people are reasonable that changes your approach to policy interventions. It moves you towards engaging with people who are the targets of interventions: changing people from targets into partners; acknowledging their context. This #partnershipthinking & more #participatory & #deliberative #engagement can manifest in methods such as qualitative interviews, focus groups, citizens assemblies, engagement with citizen science initiatives, & deliberative prompts (‘nudge plus’) during interventions. Too often we don't start with the belief that people are reasonable! Read this short helpful article which suggests that changing your approach to assuming people are reasonable enables more effective shaping of shaping public policy. It is published on sciencedirect.com & written by Jens Koed Madsen Lee de-Wit Peter Ayton Laura de Molière Carla Groom. Thanks to The Decision Lab & Rachel Devine for direction to it. #climateleadership #goodcommunication #decisionsthatmatter #partnershipcommunication #mattersthatmatter #behaviouralpyschology #trustworthycommunication #publicpolicy #environmentalpolicy #environmentaladvocacy https://lnkd.in/g-Y_8CEv

Are you crystal clear about roles in decision-making processes? Clarity helps to manage expectations & remove bottlenecks in any organisation. Input only, recommendations relying on input, agreement (or veto), impelementation or performance of a decision or the actual decision-making power - who has each of these roles? Decision-makers are accountable for the decision & have the authority to resolve impasses in the decision-making process & to commit an organization to action. Knowing your role can enhance your contribution & its impact in any organisation. Thanks to Marcia Blenko & Paul Rogers at Bain & Company for publishing a thoughtful article on this topic in Harvard Business Review in 2006 introducing the acronym RAPID for recommendations, agreement, performance, input and decisions. #decisionsthatmatter #mattersthatmatter #decisionmaking #leadership Rachel Devine https://lnkd.in/fHV6VPM

When approaching decisions do you want to make the perfect decision or one that's good enough? I.e. Are you a #Maximizer v #satisficer? Some people in the first category don't make any decision at all & are dissatisfied when they do make a decision. The proliferation of choices available to us today means it is helpful to know your default approach. In theory, the perfect mix would be to "satisfice" most of the time & only maximise the decision process when the stakes are high. If you find yourself maximising too much, try eliminating some of the options. If you're satisficing too much, spend more time meditating on the decision, and the pros and cons of each possible outcome. #decisionsthatmatter #decisionmaking #paradoxofchoice Leadership New Zealand NeuroLeadership Institute International Leadership Association Stacey Faire Rachel Devine https://lnkd.in/eGxEanfd

When did you last try a pre-mortem? No risk and has huge benefits if done before launching a significant project. It involves imagining the project being a disaster & working backward to identify causal assumptions & gaps which then can be addressed. It is less psychologically less threatening to those who back the project, helps avoid confirmation bias & group-think. The concept was pioneered by psychologist Gary Klein in the late 90s as part of research into naturalist (real world) decision-making concepts that underlies decision-making in military, healthcare & other high-stakes sectors. #decisionsthatmatter #premortem #leadership #strategy #decisionmaking #boardtabletalk Chief Institute of Directors in New Zealand Global Network of Director Institutes (GNDI) Kirsten (KP) Patterson

Market incentives and market alignment are some of the key factors that our clients consider important in decision-making. Here's a novel way of aligning them.
I love this story about 15 min cities, not just because I lived in Paris for a few excellent years & am nostalgic for those times, but because of the “participatory budget” of 75 million euros (US$82 million) that residents can allocate to crowdsourced neighbourhood projects & vote on. In NZ I know the government is thinking of ways to be innovative about funding social good. Dollar matching crowdsourced, community-supported projects could be a future financing model for #citydeals that communities love. What do you think? Is it important to you is it that people feel good about their interactions with you or your organisation? Do you deliberately design this feeling into new processes? A recent Citizens' Assemby in NZ involving #publicparticipation & #publicdeliberation put an indigeneous lens on decisions about empowering attendees, choosing venue, developing relationships before sharing opinions & ways of engaging through the process. What questions do you ask yourself before starting new #peopleengagement processes? Are you a #leader grappling with decisions? Environmental decisions? A confidential sounding board, coaching or advice might be helpful. Read Rachel Devine's thoughts on coaching.
Do you have a sense of the benefits of coaching skills? While on holiday I've been reflecting on what the recent award of the NeuroLeadership Institute's BBCC Brain-Based Coaching Certificate (an International Coaching Federation-accredited Level 1 program) means to me. I'm grateful for the support of NEXT Foundation to have been provided research, experience & practical tools to become a more effective coach. At first I think of the knowledge imparted as an unfurling fern that continues to show its innate beauty, usefulness & deep rooted system. Helpful in all contexts. I'm sure the training will positively impact me for years to come as I continue to use it. At this stage, after merely 60+ hrs of coaching education, 10 hrs of mentor coaching, 40+ hrs of buddy coaching & performance evaluations, I'm still learning & growing, loving coaching & being coached alongside my other work. It is such an important #leadership skill. I know that #curious people who are looking for #insights to improve their lives can unfurl / discover them with attention, openness & coaching support. For me the skills provide a bridge from "corporate-speak" to a more holistic communication style, that recognises how the brain is processing what it is receiving. I'm still walking over that bridge. Coaching skills empower me to reach #clarity through effective conversations so that there can be #momentum for myself & clients in an even more effective way than I did before. That is a sweet spot for me in everything I do. I love inspiring people to action, being part of others' #challengenetworks, & working on #decisionsthatmatter with #highperformanceteams. Coaching skills will be added to my swiss army knife of skills that I bring to all endeavours I'm involved in. Reach out if you want to talk more about what I'm working on. I applaud all #coaches who hold space to be in service of others & have helped me develop better coaching skills.
