📢 "Agroforestry - it is a game changer" Cem Özdemir honours agroforestry farmer Thomas Domin - Germany's Minister of Agriculture's highest award in agriculture goes to #Brandenburg 🌳 🗓 Berlin, 8th October. The Professor Niklas Medal is the highest award of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, #Germany for special merits and commitment to food, agriculture and forestry. Federal Minister Cem Özdemir rewarded #agroforestry pioneer Thomas Domin, who also is a DigitAF Living Lab farmer at this year's "political thanksgiving" in #Berlin. The #BMEL honours the agroforestry pioneer in the laudation: Thomas Domin is committed to the field of agroforestry. Not only practically on his farm, but also in cooperation with scientific institutions and as a volunteer in the German Agroforestry Association (Deutscher Fachverband für Agroforstwirtschaft (DeFAF) e.V.). 🌿 It is thanks to him that agroforestry systems are becoming more established in agriculture and are gaining public recognition: through the continuous expansion and scientific monitoring of various agroforestry systems. Especially in a region such as #Lusatia, where Thomas Domin's #farm is located, which is particularly affected by the climate crisis and as a post-mining landscape, this contributes to #biodiversity, soil protection, structuring of the landscape and responsible use of water resources. responsible use of water as a resource. At the same time, weather protection is created for the cultivated area and at the same time, yield stability is promoted and the product range is expanded. ✔ The minister highlighted: "Agroforestry, it is really, without pathos, a game changer. It is a game changer if we want to achieve something fast. For species protection, for climate protection and for the future of agriculture" The entire DIGITAF consortium congratulates Thomas for his commitment and continuos support of our research in agroforestry. Well deserved! 👏 Video: https://lnkd.in/eJ_4cdks Website: https://lnkd.in/epNXiarz DeFAF press release: https://lnkd.in/ezhCE4HM

Farming
Digital tools to boost Agroforestry in Europe to meet climate, biodiversity and farming sustainability goals.
About us
DigitAF is a project funded by the European Union (within the Horizon Europe Framework Programme - Research and Innovation Actions) and it develops digital tools to boost agroforestry in Europe to meet climate, biodiversity and farming sustainability goals. DigitAF wants to create a legacy for future scientists, stakeholders, farmers, students and communities. DigitAF aims to develop an ecosystem of open-source, user-centred digital tools to facilitate change and adapt the practices of key actors toward adopting agroforestry. Six Living Labs across six countries in the EU (Italy, Germany, Netherlands, UK, Finland and Czech Republic) will be implemented. DigitAF consortium brings together 26 partners plus 5 affiliated entities and 19 countries are involved (including 4 associated countries).

👍 It is good to hear that the European Commission is speaking our mind. Agroforestry is one of the most promising solutions in the area of carbon sequestration and achieving the targets of the Land use, land-use change and forestry Regulation (LULUCF). We invite the Commission to advocate for #agroforestry further and place it at the centre of climate mitigation and adaptation efforts. 🎧 Listen from 1:01:50 to 1:04:00 https://lnkd.in/dGRej9ba

Agroforestry is the future of sustainable farming, and can include a range of other agroecological practices. However, its adoption in Europe faces several challenges. These include a lack of tools and data which can assess its economic, environmental, and social benefits, and monitor the impact of policies. To address these obstacles, #EURAF and 25 other consortium partners from 17 countries have joined forces in the DigitAF project that aims to: ✅ Support policy-makers in developing more effective policies to encourage agroforestry adoption and carbon farming. ✅ Provide farmers with tools to optimise the design and management of agroforestry systems at the field and farm levels. ✅ Enhance the capabilities of stakeholders to assess, quantify, and market the economic, environmental, and social performance and benefits of agroforestry. EURAF is assisted in these tasks by its extensive network of affiliates and members. #Agroforestry supports #foodsecurity and nutritional security and has already proven its potential regarding #climatechange mitigation, #biodiversity preservation, and carbon sequestration. Some inspiring discussions at today's Forum for the Future of Agriculture showed that #farmers need innovative financial solutions, confidence and long-term stability from policy-makers and accessible tools to start a fair transition to foster sustainable food production in Europe. #DigitAF makes data useful, accessible, shared and reused and provides hands-on, user-friendly and open-source tools helping farmers deal with the complexity of agroforestry systems. It also helps policy-makers design more efficient agroforestry support policies by: 🌳 targeting areas with very low tree coverage; 🥇 focusing on agroforestry systems showing the highest potential also considering farmers' acceptance; ⚖ comparing agroforestry-related policies of different EU countries. #ForumforAg #HorizonEurope #HorizonEU #Agriculture
The food system is responsible for 1/3 of all greenhouse gas emissions, 80% of all biodiversity loss and up to 70% of fresh water consumption. Yet, people around the world are suffering from chronic hunger, 735 million people in fact. So we ask the question, how can we drive systemic change? To answer this question, we call on our panelists: -Patrick Child, Deputy Director General, Environment, European Commission -Vanessa Stiffler-Claus, Vice-President International Policy and Strategy, John Deere -Jörg-Andreas Krüger, President, NABU e.V. -Nanna-Louise Linde, Vice President European Government Affairs, Microsoft -Sébastien ABIS, Managing Director, Club Demeter e.V. These #ForumforAg leaders will share their knowledge and experiences, and pose some thought provoking questions of their own. Are you ready to join the discussion? [https://lnkd.in/eUcaPN6R]
