#DYK: On this day in 1868, the Navajo (Diné) started their journey from Hwééldi (Fort Sumner, NM) to their Navajo homelands after the Navajo Treaty of 1868, Naaltsoos Sání, was signed on June 1, 1868. In May 1868, two U.S. Peace Commissioners joined military leaders and selected Diné Headmen to discuss the Navajo People’s release from Bosque Redondo, the prison camp at Fort Sumner, which led to the end of the war with the Navajo People. General William T. Sherman reassured Navajo Headmen that if they chose to live in peace with the white men within a given boundary, they may leave Bosque Redondo. After days of the General displaying maps of Oklahoma and Arkansas, the Navajo Headmen were not moved as they were unfamiliar with maps and their use. The leaders depended on visual location and oral stories of Navajo terrain, Dinétah. Navajo Headman, Barboncito, asserted to the U.S. delegation, “I hope to God you will not ask me to go anywhere except my own country. If we go back, we will follow whatever orders you give us. We do not want to go right or left, but straight back to our own land.” The humble and heart-inspired words moved the General to proceed with the negotiations of the Treaty of 1868. On June 1, the Navajo People were lawfully permitted to return to a portion of their homelands within the four sacred mountains across Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona, and seventeen days later, they began their journey home. #Treatyof1868 #NavajoNation #Navajo #Sovereignty #WeAreDDC
