“Now, we have inscribed a new memory alongside those others. It’s a memory of tragedy and shock, of loss and mourning. But not only of loss and mourning. It’s also a memory of bravery and self-sacrifice, and the love that lays down its life for a friend―even a friend whose name it never knew.” — George W. Bush

Have we considered supplies we may need to take care of our kids, the older adults in our family, and family members with a disability or who use medical devices after a disaster? We also need to think about what our pets will need. I visited Ready.gov's Build A Kit page and learned about the basic items we’ll need to stay safe. #NationalPreparednessMonth

Do we have a plan to keep medical devices running and how to keep medications at the appropriate temperature after a disaster? Do we need to get backup power supplies or find out places we can keep medicine stored? Visit Ready.gov to learn what we should plan to do before something happens. #NationalPreparednessMonth

In Pinellas County, Florida an 80-year-old homeowner and her 62-year-old adult child, who has a disability, faced some challenges after Hurricane Ian. Both living on fixed incomes, they managed their expenses well, but the storm caused damage to the gutters and downspouts at the entrance of their home. This made it difficult for the homeowner to safely get to her car during rainy weather, raising concerns about the possibility of slipping and falling. Our Disaster Case Management team, led by Shanon Granado, stepped in to help. Disaster Case Manager Duane Steiner presented their case to the local Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG), which provided the necessary funding to repair the gutters and downspouts. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Disaster Case Manager Duane Steiner and the excellent work by Mitchell Roofing, the repairs were completed, making the home safer and more accessible for the homeowner. We are grateful to everyone involved in helping this family recover and regain peace of mind. #DisasterRecovery #CommunitySupport #HurricaneIan #PinellasCounty #DCM #LongTermRecovery
