One of the things we're looking forward to in 2025 is the groundbreaking, community-focused work of our inaugural Arts and Humanities grantees: Liesl Olson, Ross J., and Matthew Randle-Bent of Jane Addams Hull-House Museum. Their plan to bring live theater back to Hull-House won them a DPI science team grant in 2024 — as well as the notice of the Chicago Tribune Media Group, which named them one of its Chicagoans of the year in the arts. What kind of problems could you solve in your community through data science? Could you lower energy usage? Prevent traffic accidents? Decrease health care costs? At our latest ChiTech Discovery Days, students from Collins High School's Fundamentals of Information Technology and Exploring Computer Science classes took on those questions in a data science and design thinking course led by Jaclyn Carmichael, MPA. Thanks to Zakiyyah Claybron and the Collins staff, to Trenton Dunn from World Business Chicago, and to our former Digital Scholar Nashya Franklin for talking with Kay Monelle and sharing words of wisdom with the students! We came, we painted, we talked tech. We created some low-tech masterpieces, connected with old friends, and made new ones. (And ate some pizza!) The first PTTL Tech and Paint for former trainees was a rousing success. Here's to the start of a new tradition. #techandpaint #art #discoverdpi Gary Nixon

"Not all of us are going to be the smartest in the room. But you know what you can do if you're not the smartest in the room? You can ask for help." Former Digital Scholar Ian Aguilar dropped by a packed ChiTech Discovery Day with words of advice for computer science students from Westinghouse College Prep. Before meeting Ian, the students did an exercise in design thinking led by Jayadev Kalla — and asked him questions that made him feel like he was in a job interview! Thanks to Ian, JD, and Joanna Madigan for sharing their time and expertise with our students.

"Data is like ice cream. It has lots of flavors."—Digital Explorers instructor Duke Best. We're excited to launch this year's Discover Computing and Digital Explorers programs, which kicked off Saturday! The 9th- and 10th-graders in Discover Computing will spend six weeks learning JavaScript coding in p5js, where they can "build some pretty cool stuff," according to instructor Terrell McKinney. In Digital Explorers, students in 6th–8th grades will spend eight weeks developing mobile apps using Swift. Many thanks to Terrell for leading DC activities, to Duke and Rene Anaya on the Explorers side, and to our high school, college, and professional mentors! #tech #discoverdpi Jaclyn Carmichael, MPA Tony Torres Kay Monelle J Lindsey Vetvick Kenyanna Sanders Greg Cleveland Jr
