From a pedestrian-friendly beach connection to new spaces and attractions in Jane Byrd Park, Gensler's renderings of a revamped North Michigan Avenue show a view of Chicago's lakefront that feels familiar yet boldly innovative. But is such an ambitious re-imagining of the Magnificent Mile necessary? The answer, of course, is yes. Reinvestment is crucial for global high streets to deliver as economic engines for their respective cities continually. North Michigan Avenue was ready for its next evolution prior to COVID, having not seen major transformation since the 1990s, but today – given the changes in consumer habits, expectations, and lifestyles resulting from the pandemic – it is urgently poised for reinvention. While most of us are used to the news on TV, watching through the window of a downtown studio is a unique joy. It's great to see this Chicago window studio come back to life across from the Daley Plaza, where workers, tourists, and residents alike convene to enjoy our city's architecture, culture, and farmer's markets.
