Did you know Black Girl Day Off is observed every October 11 annually in the United States? This day is dedicated to encouraging Black women to take a mental health day to focus on their emotional well-being, recognizing their higher risk for heart disease, breast cancer, and other chronic illnesses. It aims to promote proactive health engagement within the Black community while emphasizing the need for skilled, compassionate mental health providers who understand the unique traumas and challenges faced by marginalized and oppressed individuals, ensuring they receive the appropriate care. Unfortunately, Carmella Glover and Andrea Williams will not take the day off 🥲, but we encourage you to learn more about this day's intent! #blackgirldayoff #mentalhealthawareness

On September 18, 2024, we had our Alliance Roundtable discussion, "Shaping the Future of Equity and Inclusion," which reported on the industry's current race-related challenges and actionable solutions. With expert research from Dr. Solyee Kim, Ph.D., Dr. Brandale Mills Cox, Ph.D., both of Howard University, Dr. Natalie T. J. Tindall, of the University of Texas Austin, and researcher Andrea Williams, our Director of Strategic Initiatives, the session focused on data sharing and collaboration to create a more inclusive, future-forward industry. #allianceroundtable #DEIinPR #DEIincomms

I was inspired by Imani Ellis recent post about her full circle moment with #AndyCohen, and I felt compelled to share a similar experience of my own. A few weeks ago, I had the honor of attending the Diversity Action Alliance 2024 Distinguished Communicator of Color reception, where I was recognized alongside other remarkable leaders in the communications field. One of the highlights was reconnecting with Rochelle L. Ford, Ph.D., APR (Industry Legend), who played a pivotal role in the development of Edelman’s 2020 HBCU Educators Summit—one of my proudest achievements. I was also thrilled to celebrate alongside colleagues and friends who have been vital to my journey. Tequilla White who contributed her talents to Edelman’s 4th annual Week of Belonging earlier this year, and I cherish the connection I have with Lauren Strayhorn, MPS, from our time at Georgetown. Eric Winkfield, a 2023 honoree, has been a valued collaborator since our days at FAMU. I also have to mention catching up with Aquinas Early, who just like me, brought her mom (and apparently my mom’s long lost cousin lol) to celebrate this milestone. Furthermore, sharing this experience with inspiring leaders that I deeply admire like Adrianne C. Smith and Soon Mee Kim truly enriched the moment. This event reaffirmed my belief in the importance of our collective DEI efforts and the vital role recognition plays in sustaining those dedicated to this work. Together, we can shape a communications landscape that truly reflects the richness of our communities. I’m excited about the projects ahead and eager to continue this journey with so many talented individuals. This recognition is not just a personal achievement; it represents the collective efforts of everyone who has supported me along the way. 💙

Today is the "National Day for Truth and Reconciliation," also known as "Orange Shirt Day." On September 30th, the U.S. and Canada commemorate survivors of residential schools for Native children in Canada and the U.S. The U.S. system, modeled after the Carlisle Indian School, aimed to assimilate Native children through harsh cultural erasure policies. Recent discoveries of unmarked graves at Canadian residential schools prompted the U.S. Department of the Interior to investigate the legacy of its own boarding schools and their lasting impact on Indigenous communities.
