On Friday at #ClimateWeekNYC, we heard incredible insights from leaders at the intersection of food recovery, sustainability, and technology about how we can work together to increase access to healthy, nutritious food while also making our food systems more resilient for future generations. CEO Ryan B. spoke alongside other industry leaders for a panel on food loss and food waste: Angel Veza of ReFED, Marc Zornes of Winnow, and Regina (Anderson) Harmon of Food Recovery Network. Some stand-out quotes from the panel: 💡"There's a desire to be hospitable and put the best out for your guests and diners, and sometimes it leads to unintended consequences, where too much food is produced. There are lots of different cultural factors that drive it, but it's that common desire to be hospitable, while also having a very busy, chaotic kitchen, that creates waste." —Marc Zornes on the primary causes of wasted food in food service environments. 💡"Chefs are so passionate about not wanting to waste food. What we learned is because the [restaurant] environment is so chaotic, that solutions need to be simple, convenient; these solutions need to not disrupt operations at all." —Angel Vera of ReFED talking about adoption of solutions for diverting wasted food among restaurants. 💡 "Gen Z, millennials–the largest population in the U.S. right now–these are their expectations: the gig is up, we have to stop throwing food away." –Regina Harmon on generational perspectives on food waste as it relates to food insecurity and climate change.
