This week, DoD STEM is joining TIES Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM at the 2024 STEM Learning Ecosystems Community of Practice (SLECoP) convening in Chicago to build partnerships that enhance STEM education and workforce development. Dr. Jagadeesh Pamulapati, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Science and Technology (S&T) Foundations in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD(R&E)), made opening remarks and joined a panel discussion on how emerging technologies and innovation can create accessible futures for all learners. Representatives from Air & Space STEM Outreach, the Defense STEM Education Consortium, U.S. Army DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, Office of Naval Research, Naval STEM, and SMART Scholarship will showcase the many STEM resources and opportunities available through the Department of Defense. The STEM Learning Ecosystems Community of Practice includes over 114 communities worldwide, all focused on creating strong partnerships to ensure that all young people have access to quality STEM learning experiences. Heather Mentzer is a Ph.D. candidate in physics and SMART scholar at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Directed Energy Directorate. Her work supports critical innovations in aerospace and defense, with one of her key achievements being a project that improved radiation bioeffects and enhanced shielding methods for both military and civilian safety.
