About us
The Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) is the leading authority on energy and environmental issues affecting the District of Columbia. Using a combination of regulations, outreach, education, and incentives, our agency administers programs and services to fulfill our mission. We work collaboratively with other government agencies, residents, businesses, and institutions to promote environmentally responsible behavior that will lead to a more sustainable urban environment. DOEE has about 300 engineers, biologists, toxicologists, geologists, technicians, inspectors, environmental specialists, policy analysts, administrators, public outreach specialists, and support staff. Among their many responsibilities are issuing permits, monitoring environmental conditions, providing funding and technical assistance, assessing environmental risks, developing policies, inspecting facilities, enforcing environmental regulations, working with other entities to solve everyday environmental issues, and informing and educating the public on local environmental trends and their benefits. The DOEE team promotes public and environmental health by implementing and enforcing District and Federal laws and regulations. We recognize that strong and healthy communities are central to the District’s economic prosperity, and work daily to protect the environment in which its people live, work and play.

This morning there was an exciting ribbon cutting ceremony for a nine-unit all-electric building a stone’s throw from Anacostia Park in the Fairlawn neighborhood in Southeast. A-Peace LLC, led by Ayesha Hudson, completed their Sustainable Housing redevelopment, which is sustainable in so many ways. It creates nine homes where there was one, promotes affordability and resident services, and brings the benefits of energy efficiency and solar power to its residents and the neighborhood. The ribbon cutting is the result of a lot of work by Ayesha Hudson and her partners, not least the DC Green Bank and DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU). The DC Green Bank provided essential financing and support for Ayesha in one of her first redevelopment projects. The DCSEU provided training for Ayesha on green building and incentives for the project’s energy efficient appliances. It’s a great example of the ways the DC government, including Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE), is driving affordable, green housing and the growth of new local businesses.

Excited to see the first EV charging station revamp funded by the Joint Office break ground in DC! Shoutout to Al Carr and Jordan Henderson for leading the grant application for this project, and to Eric Campbell for working on getting the original charger that this will replace 6 years ago! Thanks also to our friends at DDOT, John Thomas and Tasin Malik, EIT for their support. And our Director Richard Jackson always looks good with a shovel in his hands. His leadership helped make this expanded fast charging opportunity possible for DC residents.
The Joint Office is celebrating the groundbreaking of the nation’s first-ever EV charging station revamp funded by the Electric Vehicle Charger Reliability and Accessibility (RAA) program.⚡️ 🚗 The upgrades will make the EV charging experience faster and more convenient for drivers living in, traveling through, or visiting Washington, D.C. #driveelectric #rideelectric #zeroemission.
