All public schools aren't created equal. Schools that educate mostly students of color get $23 billion less funding, and as a result many students enter classrooms that don't have the books, technology, and supplies they need. “People should know that at DonorsChoose, we’re not just getting resources to classrooms. We are making sure we prioritize the communities that need it most. I want the Latinx community to know that DonorsChoose takes equity very seriously.” As we wrap up #HispanicAndLatinxHertiageMonth we’re spotlighting our Vice President of Procurement, Denise Diaz MBA, CPP As a parent of three children, Denise knows firsthand the impact of a strong educational foundation. A pivotal moment occurred when she realized that her son’s learning style differed from hers, prompting her to seek out additional educational resources. She recognized that it was a privilege to be able to research additional resources, because many families do not have the same tools. This experience led her to Teach For America and ultimately to her role at DonorsChoose, where she is ensures all students have access to necessary resources, especially those in underfunded schools. For Denise, it’s very important that we provide resources that reflect the diverse identities of the students we serve. In her role , she leads efforts to include diverse suppliers and products in our procurement processes. She believes that students benefit significantly when they can see their own cultures represented in the materials they use. While Denise didn’t have Latino/a teachers growing up, she acknowledges that seeing role models from the Latino community can greatly inspire students. Her message to current educators is to continue their vital work, as their presence and encouragement make a profound difference in students’ lives. Thanks to Denise for sharing your story and for your dedication to this work!

“When I was little, my mom would let me join her on ‘take your daughter to work day’ at her school. As a teacher, she knew how to help her kids excel and understood what resources could best support her classroom. It was interesting to see that the needs of schools and students really varied across the different places we lived.” - Julia P., Chief Operating & People Officer We’re continuing to celebrate #HispanicAndLatinxHertiage month by spotlighting Latino/a staff members. As a young Mexican American, Julia watched both her mom and grandmother win “Teacher of the Year” awards and she witnessed the impact her mom had on her students. Julia was born in California, and lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Gallup, New Mexico, before her family settled near the US/Mexico border in El Paso, Texas. Going to school in various places across the country, Julia observed the diversity of student backgrounds and how cultural and environmental differences meant teachers needed different tools to meet their students' unique needs. Julia began her journey at DonorsChoose leading our student thank you operations. Seeing the letters and reading the words from students felt like a full circle moment. From the beginning, Julia has loved how DonorsChoose leverages technology for positive change in education. As a parent, Julia is committed to ensuring her children have access to culturally affirming educational environments. She intentionally chose a bilingual Spanish immersion school, so that her children can experience the richness of their Hispanic heritage in a supportive community. Thanks to Julia for sharing your story and for your dedication to this work!

Last week I attended #GlobalCitizenNOW as part of UN Climate Week. Surrounded by world leaders and US-based companies working globally, had me thinking about where DonorsChoose fits into a global impact story. Right now on DonorsChoose there are 197 teachers requesting resources to educate students about climate change. Teachers are influencing the next round of change makers and global citizens through the topics that are discussed and the ideas that are generated in classrooms. Sabrina Elba asked about the role of youth in moving advocacy to action. Often that action begins in the classroom! Head to DonorsChoose.org to see if there is a global topic you can support.
