All public schools aren't created equal. Schools that educate mostly students of color get $23 billion less funding, and as a result many students enter classrooms that don't have the books, technology, and supplies they need. BOSS (Black Organization of Soulful Staff) is dedicated to building support and belonging for Black staff at DonorsChoose. As one of our employee resource groups, BOSS creates space for connection and community, like during our recent all-staff retreat. Huge thanks to our thoughtful co-leaders, including Melissa June, for creating this supportive and uplifting environment for our Black team members — both at the retreat and all year-round. 💙

Happy Homecoming! We are thrilled to celebrate the season with the launch of Quad to Classroom, an initiative to make it easy for donors to support teachers who went to HBCUs. As Kristina (Steen) Joye Lyles shared, alumni of historically Black colleges and universities are a cornerstone of America’s teaching force. Learn more about this initiative: https://lnkd.in/en2_4PZP
🗣 It’s homecoming season on the yard AND at DonorsChoose. For the first time in our org’s 25-year history, we’re rallying around K-12 educators who are HBCU alumni. Introducing our new program: Quad to Classroom! As a proud Spelman Lane alum, married to a #HowardUniversity Bison, and the proud daughter of 2 HBCU-taught educators, #HamptonUniversity and #StAug, I know firsthand the nurturing and culturally-affirming environment within those HBCU gates. Turns out that K-12 educators who went to HBCUs are especially effective at replicating that same experience when they teach; and students benefit from the classroom dynamic that creates. So this year, as I throw on my line jacket and prepare to set foot back on campus, I'm cloaked in legacy, HBCU pride, and an undaunted drive to make education more equitable. Support a teacher you know who went from the Quad to the Classroom. Send 'em to DonorsChoose! #EducationEquity #Education #K12Education #HBCUHomecoming #DonorsChoose #UNCF #WeNeedBlackTeachers

We are thrilled to share that more than 1,000 school districts are a part of our District Partnership Program! Our team launched this program 5 years ago to make it easier for districts to get resources into classrooms. Our lucky number 1,000th district is Garfield School District Re-2 in Colorado! Thank you Governor Jared Polis for helping us achieve this milestone through the recent $3.9 million in funding for Colorado projects. “People should know that at DonorsChoose, we’re not just getting resources to classrooms. We are making sure we prioritize the communities that need it most. I want the Latinx community to know that DonorsChoose takes equity very seriously.” As we wrap up #HispanicAndLatinxHertiageMonth we’re spotlighting our Vice President of Procurement, Denise Diaz MBA, CPP As a parent of three children, Denise knows firsthand the impact of a strong educational foundation. A pivotal moment occurred when she realized that her son’s learning style differed from hers, prompting her to seek out additional educational resources. She recognized that it was a privilege to be able to research additional resources, because many families do not have the same tools. This experience led her to Teach For America and ultimately to her role at DonorsChoose, where she is ensures all students have access to necessary resources, especially those in underfunded schools. For Denise, it’s very important that we provide resources that reflect the diverse identities of the students we serve. In her role , she leads efforts to include diverse suppliers and products in our procurement processes. She believes that students benefit significantly when they can see their own cultures represented in the materials they use. While Denise didn’t have Latino/a teachers growing up, she acknowledges that seeing role models from the Latino community can greatly inspire students. Her message to current educators is to continue their vital work, as their presence and encouragement make a profound difference in students’ lives. Thanks to Denise for sharing your story and for your dedication to this work!
