I love mornings! I love waking up before the sun is up, before the kids start their day, so I can enjoy my cup of coffee in silence. I feel the most productive and have the most energy earlier in the day. So every year during October -Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month- I love signing up for the early shift and visiting our law enforcement friends for roll call 💜 ☕. Doorways cannot do this work alone, and our partners at Arlington County Police Department work around the clock keeping our community safe and supporting survivors at a critical time in their lives. Cheers to the 5AM club friends! Michelle Sagatov and Karin Kelley and the rest of the Doorways crew, thank you for getting the late shifts! Teamwork really does the dream work.

Today is World Mental Health Day! This year's theme is Mental Health at Work. Centered on the worker’s voice and equity, these Five Essentials support workplaces as engines of well-being. Each essential is grounded in two human needs, shared across industries and roles. Creating a plan to enact these practices can help strengthen the essentials of workplace well‑being. A recent The Washington Post article called much-needed attention to the adverse impacts #VOCA funding cuts are having on local shelters and their ability to provide life-saving services to the people they serve. The article quotes member organization ' President & CEO Diana Ortiz's concerns about how these cuts impede their ability serve survivors. Contact your legislators today and insist they restore VOCA funding. Read more: https://bit.ly/3N9Dzqg

"In the D.C. region, this year's cut has translated into a decrease of $200,000 — or 11 percent — for Doorways, Arlington's sole provider of crisis services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Leaders say that means one less advocate to go to court with survivors; one less community advocate to help with safety planning and connecting survivors to resources; two less case managers for shelter and housing programs." You can help safeguard Doorways' life-saving services. Join us at Open Hearts, Open Doors 2024 on October 30th to give safe harbor, healing, and hope. Purchase sponsorships and tickets now at https://onecau.se/ohod2024. "One mother interviewed by The Washington Post said Doorways' services helped her come to terms with the abuse she endured and find the courage to leave. 'I couldn't see any light,' said the woman, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because she was concerned for her safety. 'Doorways brought me hope.'"
