Nearly 20 transit agencies across central and southwest Florida helped residents prepare for evacuation from Hurricane Milton. We thank our transit partners for their commitment to this response effort and for helping move hundreds of people to safety.

Improving public transportation for America's communities
About us
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) works to improve public transportation for America's communities. Since 1964, FTA has partnered with state and local governments to create and enhance public transportation systems. Today, we invest more than $20 billion annually to support and expand public rail, bus, trolley, ferry and other transit services. That investment has helped modernize public transportation and extended service into small cities and rural communities that previously lacked transit options. FTA also oversees safety measures and helps develop next-generation technology research. An agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), FTA is headed by an administrator appointed by the President of the United States. FTA is one of DOT’s 10 modes of transportation and is run by a headquarters in Washington, D.C. as well as 10 regional offices that assist transit agencies in all states and U.S. territories. FTA is an organization of more than 550 diverse, talented, enthusiastic people working to strengthen American communities, promote economic vitality, and maintain personal freedom through the development and support of public transportation.

Connecting communities is our most immediate and urgent priority. Today, FHWA Acting Administrator Kristin White traveled to Western North Carolina to assess the damage to transportation infrastructure caused by Hurricane #Helene. FHWA is committed to supporting our state and local partners as they rebuild. The road to recovery may be long, but we are dedicated to standing with communities every step of the way. Together, we can rebuild and restore vital connections.

A major step forward for the Front Range: Today FTA Deputy Administrator Veronica Vanterpool signed a $150 million grant agreement with RTD to build a bus rapid transit line along one of the city’s busiest corridors. With support from the Biden-Harris infrastructure law, the East Colfax Avenue BRT will provide residents and commuters faster, more frequent transit between downtown Denver and Aurora. #webackthefax tinyurl.com/2etf6z8p

Buses of the future need skilled transit workers to maintain them. Today, FTA Deputy Administrator Veronica Vanterpool celebrated the next phase of AC Transit’s ambitious zero-emission bus program: Zero-Emission Bus University. With partners Chabot College and Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 192, the Oakland transit agency will transform a 40-year-old training center into a 21st-century learning lab with high-tech tools to ensure workers can maintain ZEBs as AC goes completely zero emission by 2040. $25.5 million from FTA will help America’s largest zero-emission fleet benefit from ZEB U’s dynamic curriculum, including apprenticeships and the chance to earn an Associate’s Degree.
