Improving public transportation for America's communities
About us
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) works to improve public transportation for America's communities. Since 1964, FTA has partnered with state and local governments to create and enhance public transportation systems. Today, we invest more than $20 billion annually to support and expand public rail, bus, trolley, ferry and other transit services. That investment has helped modernize public transportation and extended service into small cities and rural communities that previously lacked transit options. FTA also oversees safety measures and helps develop next-generation technology research. An agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), FTA is headed by an administrator appointed by the President of the United States. FTA is one of DOT’s 10 modes of transportation and is run by a headquarters in Washington, D.C. as well as 10 regional offices that assist transit agencies in all states and U.S. territories. FTA is an organization of more than 550 diverse, talented, enthusiastic people working to strengthen American communities, promote economic vitality, and maintain personal freedom through the development and support of public transportation.

Minnesota’s first bus rapid transit line to operate mainly in bus-only lanes has arrived. Last weekend, Metro Transit’s Gold Line began service, providing a faster, more reliable connection between downtown City of Saint Paul and City of Woodbury, Minnesota. Supported by nearly $250 million from FTA, the 10-mile BRT route features on-demand station heating, frequent service and level boarding for easy access. With dedicated lanes allowing buses to avoid traffic, the Gold Line is a game-changer for transit in the Twin Cities. But it’s more than just a transportation upgrade—it’s an economic driver, with over 90,000 jobs located within a half-mile of its stations, helping attract businesses and boost growth.

Congratulations to the Jacksonville Transportation Authority on the grand opening of a $93 million multifamily development last week—part of the Florida transit agency’s transit-oriented development strategy and one of several TOD projects on the way. With direct access to the First Coast Flyer Blue Line, Kings Avenue Transit Hub and Skyway Station, the project expands housing options near public transportation and makes it easier for people to #TakeTransit throughout the community. bit.ly/41VHe1Z

Transit ridership is surging in the Puget Sound region. Six agencies that use The ORCA Card saw a collective 12% increase in 2024, totaling 151 million rides—a major jump from 2023. With new bus rapid transit lines, light rail expansions and return-to-work orders, public transit is doing some heavy lifting, improving access to jobs, school and life’s activities while reducing traffic congestion and saving commuters money on gas and parking. bit.ly/41XvKvT 🚍🚆
