Biotech data is still a mess... …and maybe that’s why we had such a fantastic turnout for our latest Data & Drinks panel on scaling data strategy in biotech! With 150 RSVPs but only 100 spots, Buzzed for Biotech packed the space with a curated group of data experts and startup founders. Alongside panelists Julia M. Maritz, 🎯 Ming "Tommy" Tang, and Patrick O'Mara, we explored practical strategies, including: - 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Bring in experienced professionals or leverage proven solutions to set up robust data systems efficiently—rather than relying on analytical teams to build from scratch (I see this far too often). - 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐯𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬: Prioritize data quality and metadata accuracy to ensure insights are unbiased and reliable - good data requires comprehensive metadata! - 𝐄𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬: Give bench scientists real-time data exploration tools, so they can visualize and analyze independently, giving computational teams more time to focus on more complex analytical problems. 🌟 Thank you to our co-sponsors for making this event happen! Ralf Felsner of Collaborative Drug Discovery - CDD Vault  John Masland of Pliancy Given the demand, 𝐰𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 & 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, diving deeper into each of these subtopics to break down data bottlenecks and inefficiencies. And to keep momentum on these types of conversations going, 𝐈’𝐦 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 with dovetail biopartners, focused on specific biotech data topics I’m constantly asked about. Each session will start with a brief intro and real-world examples, then open up to audience discussion and problem-solving. Our first session, "𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞-𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐯𝐬. 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐤 𝐑𝐍𝐀-𝐬𝐞𝐪 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡," is on November 12—join us here: https://lu.ma/c2mnvlk0 If there are any topics you'd like to see covered in- person or virtually, throw them below! 👇 #lifesciences #biotech #pharma #datastrategy #datasecurity #datascience #bioinformatics

I wanted to write a post on my experience as a new founder and the HUSTLE you need to have to sell your product/service, but… I’m packing for LA. Meetings for my music business are pulling me over there, but I’m also going to some biotech events. If you’re from either of those worlds and in the City of Angels this week, let’s meet up! Looking forward to plugging into a scene relatively unknown to me. Preparing myself for a bit of a wild time (compared to Boston at least 😅)

Hear from our CEO Daniel Dacey about how we’re much more than just another data science consulting company. Data is expensive to generate. We want to ensure you’re processing it the correct way, are able to understand what it’s telling you, and make the right strategic decisions from these insights. We’ll be releasing some case studies and hosting some webinars soon to showcase this. What topics would people like to see covered?

Biotech data and events: What’s the common thread? Both are all about bringing the right people and insights together. Whether it’s making sense of complex data or creating meaningful networking opportunities, my goal is to make both of these worlds more impactful—and I’m doing that through dovetail biopartners and Buzzed for Biotech. How? Well check out my first ever video post. 😅 I break down (at a high level) what I’ve been working on and what’s coming next: 00:23 dovetail biopartners Data science is evolving, and simply building pipelines isn’t enough anymore. At Dovetail, we focus on the bigger picture: how to interpret the data, understand its value, and drive action. The complexity of data is growing, and that’s why our approach is built around making data actionable, not just processable. 01:40 Buzzed for Biotech The rest of the year is packed with great opportunities to connect with like-minded biotech professionals. Here’s what we’ve got planned: 10/24: Data & Drinks - Scaling Your Data Strategy w/ Ralf Felsner & Collaborative Drug Discovery - CDD Vault https://lu.ma/dyjlfepo 11/14: Boston Biotech PitchFest - Pre-seed to Series A w/ Vitaliy Schafer & Leader Bank - Looking for sponsors & investor judges - 11/20: Shifting the Paradigm - Increasing Equity in Clinical Trials Summit w/ Tamika Jackson & The Beautiful Way Foundation - Looking for sponsors, panelists, & moderators - 12/10: Women of Science Leadership Lounge - Looking for sponsors - Plus, we might add some morning events if we can lock in a few sponsors! [ Shoot me a message if you can help out with what we’re looking for to make these events happen ] 02:16 Getting sh!t done together At the core of all this is a simple goal: doing things better, together. Whether we’re talking data strategy or building stronger biotech networks, it’s all about collaboration. I’m always up for open discussions on how we can solve real problems—whether it’s making sense of complex datasets efficiently or organizing events that actually bring value OR ANYTHING ELSE. So reach out if you have ideas. *Editing this video took far too long. Who has tips?* #biotech #lifesciences #pharma #datascience #networking

The situation with Tome Biosciences is beyond frustrating! In today’s funding environment, where most startups struggle to secure even $1M, Tome managed to raise a staggering $213M right out of the gate—only to fail spectacularly. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: to revolutionize gene editing with their Programmable Genomic Integration (PGI) platform. This technology was designed to reprogram cells by integrating entire genes at specific locations within the genome, offering potential cures for complex diseases like Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Armed with a MASSIVE amount of cash, they developed a pipeline of six therapeutic programs targeting various genetic disorders. But despite their groundbreaking potential, things quickly went off the rails. 🚩 Launched in Dec 2023 -> Laying everyone off by Nov 2024. Here’s where I believe they went wrong:  (Find the link to my longer blog post in the comments) 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀, 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Tome aimed to edit DNA like a word processor—a revolutionary approach. But they were far from a validated industry platform when founded and had little to show for it 9 months later. 𝗔𝗰𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀: They gambled $65M upfront on Replace Therapeutics’ underdeveloped tech. The result? Big spending with little return. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀: Six therapeutics in the pipeline, yet none beyond lead optimization. For $213M, that’s troubling. Scaling to 140 employees within months? Ambitious, but also a massive overhead risk. True biotech leadership isn’t just about scientific innovation—it’s about strategy, execution, and knowing how to burn cash efficiently (this is a necessary evil). 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀: Tome operated in the cell and gene therapy space, which requires significant computing power to store and analyze large genomic datasets—essential but costly. Ensuring that data processes are secure, compliant with regulations, and scalable for future growth adds another layer of complexity. Moreover, building bioinformatics pipelines and AI/ML infrastructure demands specialized software and highly skilled personnel. These factors, when not carefully managed, can lead to costs spiraling out of control. dovetail biopartners was created to help companies avoid these pitfalls. We build optimized data solutions and provide biological expertise to get teams to actionable insights faster, and provide strategic advising on such insights (scientific and technical feasibility, market fit analysis, investors guidance, etc.). 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: In biotech, money won’t make even the best science successful; it’s the right leadership, strategy, and execution that make all the difference. -- Post below if you have thoughts or any more insight into what happened at Tome! -- #biotech #lifesciences #pharma #tomebiosciences #tome

Even though we function as a virtual company, with our co-founders scattered across the US and Canada, we find more value in connecting with people face-to-face. This is why most of our marketing budget goes towards helping make these types of events happen vs online ads and cold outreach. So follow us and be on the lookout for some major announcements (both about events and about what we're building)!

100 breakfast burritos, 50 pastries, and 5 boxes of coffee GONE. This was the first time I didn't walk away with leftovers from one of our morning networking events. So I'd say it was a big success, and that Buzzed for Biotech is rapidly growing! Huge shoutouts to: 👉 Liyang Diao and ROME Therapeutics for co-sponsoring with my company dovetail biopartners. 👉 Project Onramp and Tiffany Zheng for participating, inviting your students to network, and telling everyone about your awesome internship program. 👉 LabCentral for being the perfect place for us to host this recurring morning event. Tim Jarrett, Spencer Plourde, Brian Madrigal, Jonathan Sanchez, and the rest of the team here have been a huge help in making these a success. Slowly getting better at taking pictures at these things. All of the good ones were actually probably taken by Salma Ben-Salem. BfB hopes to continue throwing great events for the biotech community around Boston and beyond. But in order for us to keep these morning events going monthly and to break into the evening event space, we need #sponsors. Getting sponsors is definitely the hardest piece of this endeavor. So spread the word and ping me if you're interested in getting involved with BfB! - ❗ On another exciting note, v1 of our networking web app will be launching next week❗ This version is focused on event centralization. v2 will included user interaction and engagement. Props to my dovetail biopartners CTO Eric Butcher for building this! If you want to be a beta tester, fill out the form on our website: https://lnkd.in/eKRuNRkS - Be on the lookout for future event announcements! Cheers. #networking #biotech #lifesciences #pharma #internships #coops

We had an awesome time at #bio2024 but definitely came across some new trends in the industry this year. Startups are all about staying lean. No longer focused on building large internal research teams. Outsourced R&D and partnership making is becoming the new normal. Even larger companies are starting to do this more. The future of biotech research is starting to look much different than it did a few years ago and we need to prepare ourselves for this adjustment. We’ve overhauled our business model to address these changes and will be announced soon so stay tuned! #biotech #datascience #lifesciences #pharma #startups

The biotech industry is changing in a way not enough people are talking about. This realization came about after I finally had some time to reflect on my time at #bio2024 in San Diego a few weeks ago. I actually spent most of my time at the amazing Bullpen with my incredible dovetail biopartners team with a focus on growing our network to attract future clients and partners. But while doing this I noticed two trends different from last year… 1. Many startups are streamlining operations by keeping a core C-suite and outsourcing all other functions. This strategic move allows them to allocate resources efficiently, crucial in early stages where fundraising is challenging. By outsourcing research functions, startups can stay agile and focus on core competencies, accelerating growth. 2. Collaboration is now pivotal. With financial constraints, businesses are joining forces to innovate and reduce costs. Startups and large pharma alike are finding that partnerships enable them to access new markets, technologies, and talent that would be challenging to leverage alone. Both of these things seem beneficial for my company’s future… but I’m actually more concerned. Concerned about how scientific talent is going to be used moving forward. — So… With companies relying more on outsourced work and partnerships to get things done, the hiring landscape is poised for significant change. Even large pharmaceutical companies are increasingly turning to outsourcing. This shift raises important questions for wet and dry lab scientists who may have been laid off and are now seeking roles in biotech research teams. Will they need to adjust their expectations and consider opportunities with contract research organizations (CROs) or other non-traditional roles? And this isn’t even getting into the whole “#AI is going to replace humans” debate. (My 2 cents here, AI is in it’s infancy and promises far too much right now. We still need smart humans to extract insights and make decisions.) Navigating this new “lean” landscape requires proactive strategies where professionals can still find fulfilling roles that then help companies thrive. — I'm committed to hosting events that provide value to the biotech community, and want to keep opening up discussions on tough topics. Including what I wrote out here. I have some great stuff planned with Buzzed for Biotech this year and I’m always happy to brainstorm more. So let me hear your thoughts on this new biotech landscape below, and ping me if you have ideas for impactful events! #biotech #pharma #lifesciences #jobs #recruiting #fundraising

Have you ever met people you just instantly click with? Well dovetail biopartners met for the first time in person at #bio2024… and that happened. I was impressed all week with all 3 of them. Having Eric Butcher, Mikal El-Hajjar, & Deep Patel step up makes me confident we’re going to close out the last 6 months of this year STRONG. Happy I got to introduce them to the Bullpen. We actually lived there most days. You can’t ask for a more friendly, supportive, high-caliber community for my team to plug into. We had an amazing time. Looking forward to next year. You’ve created something special Christiaan Engstrom. Now time for the 44 hour road trip back home. See ya at #bio2025 in Boston next year.
