“Like a lot of people, I have a multitude of layers. I’m a Senior Project Manager working on life sciences and data center projects, I’m an elected official for our neighborhood council, I’m a mentor, I’m an artist and queer professional and advocate. I’m originally from Mexicali, B.C., Mexico, which is right on the California border. I lived there until I was 15 years old, and then my family moved to Orange County and eventually made my way Los Angeles. I come from a big family with 27 uncles and aunts and 130+ first cousins, and I am a huge family focused person and enjoy being around people and getting to know them. All of my mom’s sisters married men from different cultures, so I have cousins who are German-Mexicans, American-Mexicans, Chinese-Mexicans. I am Italian-Mexican. That’s me in a nutshell. A queer/bisexual, cisgender, professional, creative, immigrant of mixed-race navigating this world. When I lived in Orange County, I sometimes felt like the only brown person for miles and moving to L.A. allowed me to explore all those identities and somehow they all work together in harmony to make “me” and be comfortable with who I am, every day I’m the happiest I can be because I can be myself. I am thankful for everything that has led me here. What I always say to people is that everyone has a unique journey. We are all different, and it is important for all of us to see those differences and celebrate them. Every year, the way I celebrate Pride changes, because life changes and we change. Before I came out, it was non-existent. The first year, I came out, it meant everything. Celebrating Pride was the embodiment of living what’s authentic to you, whether is the way you speak, the way you dress, the way you love, the way you form community with other people, it’s bringing all those pieces together and celebrate with other people who are doing that in the moment. Now, this year, where I am at is thankfulness, celebrating the people I love and those who love me.” Carlos Hurtado serves as a senior project manager for DPR Construction in Los Angeles. He is one of the national leaders of DPR’s LGBTQ+ employee resource group and a #pillarofconstruction. Our Pillars of Construction series celebrates the diverse experiences and perspectives of DPR employees, reflecting on how our histories and culture shape us.

Surrounded by historic buildings in a tight footprint, JBJ's Nashville had less than a foot of clearance between surrounding buildings. The exterior panels were prefabricated offsite and installed using the Upbrella track system, the first time this technology has been used in the U.S. Check out how the team did it: https://bit.ly/3KLq2np
