About us

Our team, Dragados USA, and Flatiron, collectively known as DFJV, brings the necessary transportation experience to successfully complete the California High-Speed Rail Construction Package 2-3 Project (CP 2-3). The California High-Speed Rail Authority (Authority) is responsible for the planning, design, construction and operation of the first high-speed rail system in the nation. The California High-Speed Rail System will connect the mega-regions of the State; contribute to economic development and a cleaner environment; create jobs for subcontractors and small businesses; and preserve agricultural and protected lands. Construction Package 2-3 is a 65-mile route located within the counties of Fresno, Tulare and Kings. The Project requirements are construction of at-grade, aerial, and possible below grade sections of the high-speed train, relocation of existing BNSF tracks for approximately 5.5 miles, possible crossing of existing BNSF railroad tracks, construction of waterway and wildlife crossings, and roadway reconstructions, relocations, and closures. The design-build contract will bring thousands of jobs to the Central Valley. The route will also provide environmental benefits, relieve roadway congestion and spur economic development.

Dragados Flatiron Joint Venture continues to #buildalegacy through innovation in safety. From earlier start times for employees to beat the heat, to the use of the new MX3 hydration system, mitigating heat illness is a priority for the team. This week, the safety team implemented the use of an Arm Immersion Cooling System (AICS) in the field. An AICS can be any reservoir of cold water used to immerse the hands and forearms during rest periods or after strenuous physical work in warm environments. This preventative measure can reduce core temperature and is a welcome relief for employees! #safetyfirst #teamwork

#WorldPhotographyDay is a global event that honors the artistry, craftsmanship, scientific aspects, and historical significance of photography. In celebration, Dragados Flatiron Joint Venture is excited to showcase a photograph taken by our very own Irrigation Structures Foreman, Ronnie Simental. Captured in the early hours at the Cross Creek Viaduct, the image features surveyor Jim Allgood as he meticulously sets up his "total station." We are proud to capture and share this historically significant project with you. Thank you for following! #Photography #Surveyors #Construction #DFJV

#SafeAndSoundWeek highlights the vital importance of employing appropriate fall protection measures. According to OSHA, falls are among the most common causes of serious work-related injuries and deaths. Handrails become essential when tasks are performed at heights exceeding 6 feet. To enhance fall prevention and workplace safety, engineers at Dragados Flatiron Joint Venture developed an innovative removable handrail system for our construction site. This system aided workers during the concrete placement on tub girders while ensuring it did not interfere with various stages of the construction process. Watch the video below to learn more. #FallProtection #SafetyFirst #DFJV

#BackToSchoolMonth! Our Dragados Flatiron Joint Venture team members recently contributed school supplies and wish list items to support teachers and schools near our work sites in Fresno and Kings counties. We believe in building a legacy through connection to the communities we work in, and this was a great opportunity to support the educators in the area. We were excited to find out that Alan Badillo, our DFJV Operations Manager, is an alumnus of Kit Carson Elementary! With Segment 2 Manager Dan Ladd, he was able to personally deliver the supplies to the school he once attended and played at. In addition, Sean Lind, our Project Director, brought boxes of supplies to Monroe Elementary in Fresno County with our Segment 1 Manager, Isaac Wedam. We hope that the donations to these schools and also, Lakeside Elementary will help support the teachers and students starting a new school year. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the DFJV employees who donated. #Community #Teachers #SchoolSupplies #Students #DFJV #BuildingaLegacy Kings County Office of Education

#ProfessionalEngineersDay! Dragados Flatiron Joint Venture proudly recognizes the contributions of our esteemed Professional Engineers. Roberto Kuchkarian, P.E., is the Assistant Design Manager for DFJV on the California High-Speed Rail project. With over 20 years of experience, he coordinates construction submittals and design changes. His typical day involves reviewing technical documents and managing urgent on-site adaptation requests. Roberto tackles challenges and deviations from plan drawings, working closely with his team to find quick solutions. He collaborates with various engineering disciplines, from railways to structures, ensuring efficient communication between the Engineer of Record and project teams. Roberto values the dynamic environment, and the lasting friendships formed at DFJV. Thaddeus Van Essendelft, P.E., is a Project Engineer for DFJV on the California High-Speed Rail project. He has been with DFJV for six years. Each day varies depending on the current construction tasks. On some occasions, his day begins at midnight at a concrete pour. Generally, he oversees the construction of overpass bridges, which involves scheduling, cost monitoring, ordering materials, coordinating equipment requirements, and ensuring both quality and safety. Additionally, he also developed lift plans for our cranes and formwork and falsework drawings. Managing daily urgent tasks while planning work months in advance is a constant balancing act. What Thaddeus finds most rewarding is collaborating with DFJV field crews, from whom he learns something new each day. His advice to aspiring Professional Engineers (P.E.) is to surround yourself with people who know more than you and don’t be afraid to take the PE exam. The hardest part is starting the process. Last week, the Dragados Flatiron Joint Venture (DFJV) safety team took part in a Chemical Drift Training session organized by the Kings County Agriculture Department. The team learned about spray drift, factors that influence drift, and ground and aerial pesticide application practices. This training was instrumental in keeping DFJV employees informed about the most current methods of chemical spraying. By staying up-to-date, the DFJV safety team can ensure worker safety.
