In preparation for a possible strike on the US East Coast, Hapag-Lloyd has advised of two new surcharges: Work Disruption Surcharge (WDS) and Work Interruption Destination Surcharge (WID). These are effective from January 20th – i.e., potentially 4 days into a strike. It will only apply if there are disruptions, otherwise it will be waived. It does not apply to cargo gated in, or on the water, prior to January 20th. Both WDS and WID are 850 USD/20’ and 1700 USD/40’. WID applies to cargo from the Far East to US East and Gulf coasts whereas WDS applies to cargo from other origins to US East and Gulf coasts. Today is day 402 of the Red Sea crisis, no new developments. I wish all a joyful Christmas Day.

Dock Bumpers: The Unsung Heroes of Safe Berthing These are dock bumpers, a type of fixed fender used at berths for large #ships. Even at very low speeds (e.g., just over 1 knot), the #energy transmitted by a 250,000-tonne ship during berthing is immense. Fenders like these play a critical role in absorbing low-speed impact forces. By compressing a gas-filled cushion, they dissipate the force, preventing damage to both the ship and the wharf. In 2023, about 84% of the Port's general cargo (containers, break bulk, autos and farm and construction machinery) flowed through the public terminals. Nearly 14 million tons of general cargo total.
