Every Black community has a long tradition of using food as medicine, and many of us grew up with the same home remedies that our mothers and grandmothers passed on throughout generations. Folks want us to believe that we don't know what is nourishing to our bodies, but we know that is not true! This week, we're highlighting how different Black cultures worldwide are using one of the most trendy produce items of the last ten years in our daily lives. Avocado is rich in healthy fats, vitamins C, E, K, & B6. It contains fiber & antioxidants that support heart health & brain function. Some recipes our communities use avocado for include: ✧ Avocado and Papaya Salad (Caribbean): A tropical salad made with avocado, papaya, and a lime-honey dressing. ✧ Avocado and Tomato Sandwich (Southern United States): A simple sandwich made with avocado slices, tomatoes, and a drizzle of olive oil on whole grain bread. Contact us if you grow avocado and would like to connect with Dreaming Out Loud! 🥑 #HealthyFats #Avocado #DreamingOutLoudInc #BrainHealth #EatLocal #CaribbeanCuisine #SouthernFlavors #FoodAccessibility#FreshFood#FarmToTable #FoodJustice#CommunityGarden#SustainableFarming#FoodEntrepreneurs #SocialEnteprise #FoodSecurity#LocalFood#HealthyEating#GrowYourOwn #Community #FoodisMedicine #DOL #DreamingoutLoud

To create economic opportunities for the DC metro region’s marginalized communities by building a healthy food system!
About us
Dreaming Out Loud, Inc.'s mission is to build an equitable food system, economic opportunity for marginalized people, and more resilient communities. We work to strategically and systemically address the issues of community health, employment, and economic empowerment within communities by transforming the food system Wards 6, 7, and 8 of Washington, DC. Founded in 2008, Dreaming Out Loud (DOL) was created in response to educational and economic disparities in underserved, low-income communities. Our work began in Ward 7 in Washington, D.C. where we taught children character and leadership development; developed and implemented a youth workforce development program for 72 participants working in the Mayor’s “Green Summer Jobs Corps”. Along the way, DOL noticed consequential issues surrounding food systems and economics in our partner communities. This lead to the establishment of a network of farmers markets working to fight “food deserts” and build health equity. Seeing the nexus between health and economics, DOL has developed an innovative approach, vertically integrating the food-system in African-American communities through: (1) Urban farming, (2) Food access via community-centered farmers markets and (3) A “healthy food hub”: a mission-driven aggregation, storage, and distribution facility for local produce to restaurants, schools, and other food related-businesses. Since 2014, DOL has reached more than 40,000 people, distributed more than 250,000 pounds of produce, and hosted more than 1,500 people in healthy cooking demonstrations at our farmers markets and employed 12 youth in summer workforce programs in Wards 6, 7, and 8.

One challenge about changing the narrative around #healthy, #organicfood sits right on the surface. Mass manufacturing of food forces #fruitsandveggies to look, weigh, and grow in a very specific manner. Corporations want every #carrot, #zucchini, etc. to look and weigh the exact same and grow within a set deadline to meet their production targets. But nature doesn't work that way! So many factors about your soil, your methods, the #weather that is out of your control, etc. play into how and when the food sprouts from the earth. Here's an example of some carrots we harvested from the #Farm at Kelly Miller that look like two crossed fingers and a HUGE zucchini from a farmer in our network next to a #watermelon for comparison! #goodfood #locallysourced #locallygrown #blackfarmers #blackfoodie #mothernature #motherearth #eathealthy #healthyfood #healthiswealth #foodismedicine #foods #foodlovers #organicvegetables #freshvegetables

We've been getting to work out in #Ward8! As many of you know, we don't address food deserts because we know that food access is a man-made problem with plenty of man-made solutions available for those who care to fix it. Although Ward 8 has the highest number of #farmers in #ChocolateCity, it is still considered the hardest hit by what we call #FoodApartheid. Since the two wards #EastOfTheRiver can only access produce at two big box stores, #DreamingOutLoud is building a market in #HistoricAnacostia! The significance of building something at the intersection of #MLK and #MarionBarry is not lost on us, but knowing that we will be able to give more market access to #BlackFarmers and #BlackBusinessOwners in the region while giving our community a chance to buy #LocallyGrown organic produce is an honor and a privilege that we don't take lightly. Tell your friends and follow this journey with us all the way to the grand opening!! #LinkInBio #FreshFood #FoodJustice #BlackOwned #HealthIsWealth #HealthyEating #GrowYourOwn #FoodIsMedicine #SmallBusiness #LocallySourced

Black communities from Africa across the global diaspora have always used plants as medicine, and we want to share a bit about how those traditions have continued in recipes across our cultures. Sorrel/hibiscus is rich in vitamins C & A. It contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties that support heart health & may help lower blood pressure. Some recipes you can use sorrel/hibiscus for include: ✧ Sorrel Drink (Caribbean): A traditional holiday drink made with dried hibiscus petals, ginger, cloves, and sugar, served cold. ✧ Bissap Juice (West Africa, Senegal): A refreshing drink made with hibiscus petals, mint, and sugar, served chilled. DM us if you grow sorrel/hibiscus and would like to connect with Dreaming Out Loud! 🌺 #HeartHealth #Sorrel #DreamingOutLoudInc #BloodPressureSupport #EatLocal #CaribbeanCuisine #WestAfricanFlavors #FoodAccessibility#FreshFood#FarmToTable #FoodJustice#CommunityGarden#SustainableFarming#FoodEntrepreneurs #SocialEnteprise #FoodSecurity#LocalFood#HealthyEating#GrowYourOwn #Community #FoodisMedicine #DOL #DreamingoutLoud

#ICYMI --> This month's Sisterhood Supper was a beautiful time to connect and pour into each other! We had a chance to honor some of our Food #Sheroes and give some young ladies a front-row seat to what building community looks like. We are so grateful to be able to support the work of our friends at @_iamwandaorg and we're looking forward to next year! #SisterhoodSupper #WANDA #JuneteenthCelebration #blackowned #blackfoodie #healthiswealth #blackpeopleunite #blackcommunity #healthandwellness #blackgirlmagic
