Susan Ousterman : "Nobody wants to accept that their child might be injecting drugs. Not allowing them to have access to what they need is not going to stop them.” Harm reduction recognizes people use drugs, offering the support and tools needed to keep people alive and have a chance at recovery. About us
The Drug Policy Alliance is the leading organization in the U.S. working to end the drug war, repair its harms, and build a non-punitive, equitable, and regulated drug market. We envision a world that embraces the full humanity of people, regardless of their relationship to drugs. We advocate that the regulation of drugs be grounded in evidence, health, equity, and human rights. In collaboration with other movements and at every policy level, we change laws, advance justice, and save lives.

When it comes to substance use disorder treatment, it needs to be voluntary, effective, affordable, accessible, & appealing. We all agree that we need more treatment - let’s make sure it actually helps people. Read our new report: https://lnkd.in/eZn44MSF

Many people who want treatment can’t get it. There are long lines for treatment, or treatment programs do not exist at the level needed for those seeking help. We’re advocating for evidence-based treatment that people can easily access when they need and want it. People shouldn’t have to wait in long lines. They shouldn’t be denied treatment for inability to pay or because it’s just not available. Read our report to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eZn44MSF

Housing helps people build stable lives. But an amendment to the Fair Housing Act currently excludes people with drug selling convictions from protections guaranteed to everyone else. Landlords should make rental decisions based on what matters, not outdated drug convictions. https://lnkd.in/ehrTTjrm

The LA Times is right. Decades of punitive approaches have shown that harsh sentencing & increased criminalization make outcomes worse for those struggling with addiction. Drug treatment in CA is already difficult to access for those who want it. Prop 36 would worsen this by diverting taxpayer dollars away from health services & treatment. Californians deserve health-based solutions to the overdose crisis, not false promises of change. That means expanding overdose prevention and harm reduction services; ensuring low-barrier access to voluntary treatment; expanding community response services for mental health, substance use, and homelessness needs; and increasing affordable and supportive housing. Read more about why Prop 36 is a failed solution to the issues facing Californians: https://lnkd.in/eYZp6Prb
Endorsement: No on Proposition 36. California shouldn't revive the disastrous war on drugs
