Dr. Jim Yong Kim, co-founder of Partners In Health and former president of the The World Bank Group, will share reflections on his 40-year career to advance global health equity in the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗝. 𝗗𝘇𝗮𝘂 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 on April 15. Kim, a long-time collaborator and friend of global health visionary and Duke alumnus Dr. Paul Farmer, will reflect on his work alongside Farmer to deliver healthcare to some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable citizens, as well as the critical challenges that remain in achieving Farmer’s vision of high-quality healthcare for every global citizen. We encourage everyone in the DGHI and global health community to make plans to join this in-person event, in which one of global health's most distinguished leaders will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Farmer while renewing a commitment to his vision for global health equity. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m., with a reception at 5 p.m. in Duke University's Karsh Alumni Center.

The abrupt halt to thousands of U.S. global health and humanitarian aid programs puts lives at risk, researchers say. While agreeing there was room for reform, panelists at a forum last week said the frozen programs have reduced outbreaks of malaria, HIV and other diseases and served to strengthen American national security and diplomacy.

As the news cycle moves on, we want to assure you that you are not forgotten. The North Carolina Global Health Alliance will continue to lift up and fight for the foreign aid community and the millions of people around the world who benefit from American foreign aid. NCGHA Executive Director, Brianna Clarke-Schwelm, MPH (she/her), spoke with North Carolina reporters yesterday, ensuring that our neighbors across the state understand what this disruption to foreign aid will do to our own state's economy. You can watch the piece on WRAL here: https://lnkd.in/ezFK8uZv And the piece on CBS 17 here: https://lnkd.in/eyx-nNYh The days ahead are uncertain, but we know how much your work matters and we will not stop working on your behalf. #usaid #ncgha #ncglobalhealth #globalhealth

As we kick off the new year, we took one last look at the stories that moved us during 2024. And there were many to choose from, including inspiring work to build surgical tools in Uganda, a project to reduce injuries from snakebites, and an effort led by Duke University students to start a childcare center in a hospital in Kenya. Here's our list of some of the most memorable stories about DGHI research, education and partnership activities in the past year.

While there is no shortage of breathtaking landscape or historical treasures in Peru’s Sacred Valley region, the same can’t be said for essential health services. Most of the 100,000 people living in the area must seek care in larger cities an hour or more away. But Duke senior Akhilesh Shivaramakrishnan's research project is part of a growing partnership with VIDAWASI Perú to expand access to health services in the remote region. https://lnkd.in/e5RW8uwh
