As internship application season is upon us, we wanted to highlight what one of our student’s did last summer. Ziyuan Chen, a second-year master’s student, completed an internship at DUMAC, where she furthered her interests in asset and portfolio management! She was involved in both quantitative and qualitative analysis for investment decisions, as well as optimized AI-driven research solutions. She also evaluated the portfolio’s GHG emissions. She developed strong financial analysis and modeling skills using tools like Stack AI, Bloomberg and Edgar API. Ada says a highlight of her internship was getting to do independent research on the spirits industry, where she analyzed market trends in the Chinese baijiu sector, comparing them with Western spirits and sharing her findings with the team. Ada will graduate this December 2024, and we are excited to see where her career takes her!

This week, students in FINTECH 535 -- Advanced Design and Testing of Algorithmic Trading Systems with Python -- completed their unit on creating live trading apps in Python using a custom Python package being developed in tandem with the class (shinybroker.com). Armed with the ability to use reactive Python objects to interact with orders, prices, and and positions, the course now shifts to its main goal: applying reinforcement learning to train an autonomous agent to manage hedged portfolios of stocks and options. Students will be publishing their results online, so be sure to check back to see how such an ambitious undertaking turns out! The photo and commentary by Jake Vestal, professor of FINTECH 535 and developer of shinybroker.com. If you would like to hear more about our courses, contact us at pratt_fintech@duke.edu.

As internship application season is upon us, we wanted highlight what one of our student’s did last summer. Yutong (Amber) Sun, a second-year master’s student, completed an internship at DUMAC, where she furthered her interest in quantitative risk management! She built regression models to adjust trading volume allocation, as well as analyzed liquidity risks of different trading strategies. She gained experience in Bloomberg API, in which she queried peak trading day and other related data using the software. Amber says a highlight of her experience was being able to communicate frequently with her mentor Rora, peers in other teams, and the team leader, Professor Dominic Pazzula. They provided her lot of help throughout the process and gave her insightful suggestions for her future career, which she greatly appreciates!
