Tuesday, July 23 we held a rededication ceremony for Portia Johnson Drive. Portia Johnson Drive originally ended at the intersection near the old baseball field. When we were working to build our new administration buildings we were asked by the city of Duluth what we wanted the name of our road to be. We decided to extend Portia Johnson Drive all the way down to H. Courtney Drive. Her impact on the Duluth community was enormous and wanted to make sure we honored her by keeping and expanding the road named after her. In 2007, when it was proposed that Central High School be closed, Portia joked in an article by the Duluth News Tribune, that she hoped people would still see the sign with her name on it once the school closed. And we just want Portia and her family to know that her name will continue on in many ways, including the very road our offices are built. We are deeply honored that our school district office address is 709 Portia Johnson Drive.

While administration and school board members were lobbying for Duluth students and staff on Wednesday they ran into Denfeld Student School Board Rep. Larisa Miller (left) who is at the Capitol this week as she was accepted into the high school page program. She was able to take a moment to say hello and get a picture with School Board member Stephanie Williams (right). Congratulations Larisa on this amazing opportunity! We can’t wait to see what you do next! #ISD709EmpowerED
