The Dynamo Energy Transition Summit at Climate Week tackled the big topics with the big movers and shakers of the industry. We’re thrilled to witness Greg Jackson, Founder & CEO at Octopus Energy, join Alix Steel, Anchor Bloomberg Markets, European Close, Commodities Edge at Bloomberg, during a fireside chat about how innovative technologies are revolutionizing the energy market. With renewables now outpacing coal as a power source, disruptive technologies like smart grids and AI integration are crucial to scaling efficiency. As the energy sector undergoes a digital transformation, we heard from Octopus’s Founder how they and their company, Kraken, enable greater grid flexibility for utilities and their customers in an increasingly digital energy world.    Ever the story-teller, Greg spoiled us with this analogy as a cautionary tale…  Procrustes was a Greek innkeeper. If a guest were too long in the bed, he would chop your legs off, and if you were short, he stretched you. Our energy system is moving from a world where, with coal, you can always make the amount of energy the exact same length of the bed to one with renewable, where the amount of energy varies. What would’ve been better is if Procrustes said: “’If you’re a bit long for the bed, curl up. And if you’re short–enjoy the space’... and that’s how we should be thinking about energy to consumers!”     Thanks to both Greg and Alix for this engaging and fast-paced look at the energy transition.     #DynamoSummit2024 #ClimateAction #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateWeek #EnergyTransition

The US faces significant challenges, with aging infrastructure and an anticipated 40% increase in demand by 2040. How can we overcome bottlenecks and unlock new opportunities for renewable integration?     These are topics that Dynamo Energy Hub’s Co-Founder & President, Kristin Barbato, asked of our panel of grid infrastructure executives during a panel called Gridlock: The Challenges and Opportunities Facing the Transformation of the Energy System. The panel featured Lynda Clemmons, Chief Sustainability Officer at NRG Energy, David Hardy, Group EVP & CEO at Ørsted, Sarah Orban Salati, CCO at National Grid Ventures, US, and Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO at EDP Renewables North America, to discuss the ongoing grid modernization efforts and their insights into policy shifts that can drive grid innovation.      #DynamoSummit2024 #ClimateAction #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateWeek #EnergyTransition

Having come from very successful endeavors in the private sector, both Under Secretary David Crane and Deputy Under Secretary Leslie Biddle amplified the relationship between private sector and public sector to collaborate on big initiatives.  Not only were they able to celebrate the impressive funding capability of the DOE (eg. over $62B in clean energy projects from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law alone), but also spoke of the accomplishments from funding recipients. This has been an era of significant realignment for the Department’s innovation mission, and they discussed how that in the past few years, Congress has dramatically refocused the DOE’s mission on demonstration and commercialization efforts through the Energy Act of 2020, the IIJA, and the IRA.  They closed the discussion, agreeing that no matter what happens in November, there will be a transition of sorts at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). In the meantime, they are still tirelessly working to get more funding out the door in the remainder of 2024 and encourage the private sector to continue pushing forward with big, innovative projects for the energy transition. #DynamoSummit2024 #ClimateAction #EnergyTransition

Here’s a quick recap of 2023 investment trends and how they are surging forward in 2024 and beyond.    Today, Albert Cheung, Deputy CEO & Head of Global Transition Analysis at BloombergNEF, took to the stage in front of a standing-room-only crowd to present the latest energy trends briefed in BNEF’s annual report, New Energy Outlook. This session covered emerging trends, including record growth in solar and wind capacity, and offered a glimpse into the future of global energy markets. A few notable trends:  ⚡️ 2023 saw renewables surpass fossil fuels in Europe for the first time, a historic moment for the transition. ⚡️ Tripling global renewables would put us close to a net-zero pathway. ⚡️ Energy investment needs to ramp up, particularly for storage and grid. ⚡️ For the Net Zero Scenario, multiple technology pathways must succeed. #DynamoSummit2024 #ClimateAction #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateWeek #EnergyTransition
