"Though students at risk of dyslexia especially benefit from systematic phonics instruction, balancing comprehension and decoding skills is equally important for them. EarlyBird is one of the few screeners that rigorously assess oral language skills, such as listening comprehension, in addition to phonological awareness and phonics. 'Our system carefully listens to, and automatically scores, the oral language skills that are predictive of future reading,' says EarlyBird cofounder Carla Small." https://bit.ly/3X26IcC

“It can be done, and I think the data is worth the challenge that it takes,” said Rachel Arnold, literacy coordinator for the South Central BOCES. In many cases, parents were notified about the results of the EarlyBird screening at parent-teacher conferences. Often, the results confirmed suspicions families already had that something wasn’t quite right — say, their child wasn’t picking up the ABCs, or couldn’t find the right words to express themselves. Haralson said parents appreciated seeing the screening results and learning how they could shore up their children’s weak areas with early reading activities at home. “They were so psyched,” she said. “They thought it was brilliant that we were even looking this early to see if there was any type of issue.” #edchat #k12 #literacy #earlyeducation #earlyliteracy #earlyliteracymatters #dyslexia #sor #scienceofreading #structuredliteracy #edtech

Today, EarlyBird is announcing a new collaboration with the Florida Center for Reading Research (FCRR) that will bring a groundbreaking literacy assessment and dyslexia screener into classrooms across the country. The assessment, based on research made possible with support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, applies a whole-child and evidence-driven approach to identifying kids at risk for not becoming proficient readers by third grade. “EarlyBird has been working with districts for years to prevent dyslexia through gameplay,” said Carla E. Small, CEO and Co-founder. “Incorporating the Reach Every Reader assessment… allows us to offer school districts a program that’s the perfect balance of ready-to-use and research-informed.” #edchat #k12 #literacy #earlyeducation #earlyliteracy #earlyliteracymatters #dyslexia #sor #scienceofreading #structuredliteracy #edtech

Last week, the EarlyBird team stopped in to visit our partners at Challenge Prep Charter School in NYC. From writing letters to Pip to practicing around the sound wall, students here aren't just building their literacy skills—they're having fun. This #TeacherAppreciationWeek, we're grateful for the educators going the extra mile to make their classrooms a safe and joyful place for all students. #TAW24 #ThankATeacher
