Making life-long memories, connecting with nature, and learning from scientists are just a few things you can expect on an Earthwatch expedition. As participant Brooke Sabin says: "For the volunteers, it’s a chance to discover a destination in ways that take them far off the typical tourist track and to connect with people from varied backgrounds—all while contributing to research that aims to protect the planet. In other words, to travel with a purpose." — Brooke Sabin on the expedition "Wildlife in the Changing Andorran Pyrenees" Considering an expedition? Ever wonder why researchers catch and release sharks? Scientists catch, measure, tag, and release sharks to assess their health and abundance and monitor population trends, which is essential for effective conservation efforts. 🦈 Monitor health and populations 🦈 Track movements 🦈 Understand behaviors 🦈 Perform genetic studies 🦈 Support sustainable local economies Pictured: Earthwatch volunteers help scientists study sharks in Belize and Sarasota, Florida. #SharkResearch #SharkConservation #WildlifeConservation #CitizenScience #Expedition #ResearchExpedition #ParticipatoryScience #MarineConservation #VolunteerScience

"This expedition has reinforced my commitment to environmental stewardship and has equipped me with fresh perspectives and ideas that I am eager to bring back to my work and community in Brazil. It has also underscored the importance of our collective efforts in driving meaningful change for our planet." 💬 Thank you, Mariana, for so perfectly capturing the essence of Earthwatch's mission! Since our founding, volunteers have contributed over 10 million hours of field research. Beyond their contributions during expeditions, our volunteers create a ripple effect that inspires action wherever they go. We are glad you could support shark research in Florida as an EY-Earthwatch Ambassador!
Last month I had the privilege to join EY-Earthwatch Ambassadors program. This expedition was not just a trip, it was a profound immersion into the heart of environmental conservation and a testament to the power of collective passion and purpose. During this expedition with Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium and Earthwatch Institute I had the privilege of working alongside a team of dedicated researchers and fellow EY colleagues who share a deep commitment to ocean conservation and shark welfare. Together, we engaged in hands-on research activities, contributing to vital conservation efforts and gaining invaluable insights into the challenges and triumphs of protecting Sharks and our marine ecosystems. The experience was a perfect synergy of my personal and professional worlds. It resonated deeply with my childhood spent in nature's embrace, hiking and diving in some of Brazil's most beautiful landscapes, and my career at EY, where I've been actively involved in change management and social impact and sustainability initiatives. I had the opportunity to bring aspects of change management into our consulting project for implementing AI at Mote. We could also contribute with a maturity assessment with weighted criteria to select projects that are most ready for successful AI implementation. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible facilitator, Coralys Negretti whose kindness and expertise were instrumental in making this journey unforgettable. Another special thanks to Mote Team Demian Chapman, Valerie Hagan, Camryn Grace Marshall and Jack Morris, who shared their knowledge, passion with sharks and were patient and attentive in our field learning. To my colleagues of EY Brazil (Carlos, João), EY US (Carson, Stephanie, Morgan, Sara, Anea), EY México (Yetzali) and EY Israel (Yair Cahan), your passion is contagious, and your dedication is inspiring. A special thanks to EY US and Alexandra Blair for this incredible opportunity. This expedition has reinforced my commitment to environmental stewardship and has equipped me with fresh perspectives and ideas that I am eager to bring back to my work and community in Brazil. It has also underscored the importance of our collective efforts in driving meaningful change for our planet. I am more motivated than ever to continue advocating for sustainability and leveraging my skills to contribute to a more sustainable future. Let's keep pushing the boundaries of what's possible and work together for a healthier, more resilient Earth. ♥️ #Earthwatch #Sustainability #Conservation #OceanProtection #Sharks #EY #EYUS #EYEarthwatchAmbassadors

Our expeditions are one way to achieve our mission: engaging people worldwide in scientific field research and education. Thank you, Julián, for sharing your experience supporting owl research as an Earthwatch-EY Ambassador! 🙏 We are thrilled when participants share that Earthwatch expeditions have provided them with a greater appreciation for the environment.
My week with EY Earthwatch Institute Ambassadors and HawkWatch International in the Chiricahua Mountains was a profound journey of learning and contribution 🌿🦉. Delving into the secret lives of owls, nature's impeccable indicators of ecosystem health, we applied our professional expertise to bolster HWI's conservation efforts 🌱. This fusion of business acumen and environmental stewardship exemplifies EY's commitment to building a better working world 🌍. Grateful for the insights, camaraderie, and the shared vision for a sustainable future. Shoutout to Dave Oleyar, our EY trip leader Madeline M. Wagner, and the support from Shannon College 🤝 #EY #Earthwatch #HawkWatch #Sustainability #ConservationInAction Note: all birds were handled for scientific research and with the proper federal and state permits.

Our 84th volunteer team recently completed their "Conserving Threatened Rhinos in South Africa" expedition. We are proud of our 20-year collaboration with Mankwe Wildlife Reserve, which yielded extensive data on several vulnerable species. Thanks to Mankwe scientists, staff, and Earthwatch participants, this research has led to scientific progress that can contribute to wildlife conservation. In this amount of time, six PhD students have completed their thesis, 20 peer-reviewed publications have been published, and more are on the way. Thank you to all who contributed to this research! Your support is invaluable and multiplies the impact scientists can have on their own. 👏 #conservation #wildlifeconservation #citizenscience #researchexpedition #wildliferesearch

Join us in celebrating the discovery of a new hammerhead shark species, Sphyrna alleni! 🦈 Earthwatch scientist Dr. Demian Chapman, Director of Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium Center for Shark Research, led various shark research efforts that contributed to this discovery. Including two research expeditions in Florida and Belize, where Earthwatch volunteers supported scientists with data collection. According to Cindy Gonzalez, an FIU researcher and lead author of the article in Zootaxa that formally describes the new species, the existence of the new species, Sphyrna alleni, was hidden because it looks so similar to another species, the bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo. Identifying this new shark species is a testament to the power of scientific collaboration and volunteer science. 👏 We are proud to be part of the network of collaborators, including Mote Marine, Florida International University, Florida Atlantic University, the Mays Family Foundation, and local fishing communities, that made this discovery possible. 🔗 Click to read the full story: https://lnkd.in/eYbhDAMx #Sharks #NewSpecies #Earthwatch #SharkConservation #MarineConservation

Earthwatch volunteers are at the forefront of marine conservation efforts in Costa Rica! 🐳👏 As part of our Marine Life Conservation expedition, Earthwatch participants support scientists studying humpback whales and dolphins in Costa Rica. Since our project's launch in 2013, Earthwatch teams have conducted 301 boat surveys, accounting for 59% of all fieldwork in Golfo Dulce! This expedition's impact doesn't end with data collection. The project's scientists, led by Dr. Oviedo Correa, provide technical advice to the Whale Watching in Golfo Dulce Development Plan. In collaboration with other NGOs, researchers are fostering the extension of maritime limits in Piedras Blancas National Park and striving for the adoption of a new conservation status for inshore dolphins. Want to support this critical work? Join us this December and book your space on our next expedition! ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ewcd4FgB #MarineConservation #VolunteerTravel #MarineResearch #HumpbackWhale #Dolphins #CostaRica #WildlifeConservation #VolunteerAbroad #Conservation #Expedition
