💡 What an inspiring #FNCE2024! From growing partnerships with medical and dental professionals, to the expanding presence of RDNs in the Food as Medicine movement, it's clear the role of RDNs continues to grow and evolve. Here are our top 3 FNCE takeaways: 💪🏽 High-protein and gut health products continue to be on the rise The Expo showcased a surge of high-protein and gut health products, addressing growing consumer interest in foods that help optimize satiety and gut health/function and foods that support weight management efforts. 💬 Key discussion topics Sessions explored trending topics such as ultra-processed foods, nutrition counseling for obesity management in conjunction with GLP-1 agonist/obesity medications, as well as the intersection of sustainability and nutrition, all of which further expand the conversation on systems-level approaches to health. 📍 Satellite events aren't going anywhere Opportunities to connect outside of sessions remain a popular choice for RDNs and brands alike to network and deepen connections. We are excited to bring these learnings back to our team and clients to continue driving positive impact in the food and nutrition space.

I had the opportunity to attend this congressional briefing on behalf of our Eat Well Global, Inc team and here are a few key takeaways. Great seeing Tufts University as a leading voice in the dialogue, and MD Dariush Mozaffarian leading the way alongside other health practitioners and scientists. With nearly 15 million U.S. adults currently taking a GLP-1 medication, and with that number expected to rise, we’ve got some work to do to help set up these consumers for healthy success. Let’s keep the following in focus: 🥘Nutritionally-tailored meals and groceries (I.e. Food is Medicine initiatives) can help patients on GLP-1s maximize the benefits of the drugs, minimize challenges and costs of the drugs, and support lifestyle changes for long-term health. 🔄 Access to GLP-1s is a sustainability issue. Due to the current state of insurance coverage, high cost of the drugs, and volume of individuals in the U.S. with diabetes and obesity that could benefit from the drug, there is no reality where all these folks could be on the drug, for life. We need a whole ecosystem approach that leverages the medication plus lifestyle modifications with expert (dietitian, personal trainer, prescriber) support. 👩🏽⚕️ Nutrition needs to be part of the conversation and care plan. Prescribing physicians need nutrition education to better support patients on GLP-1s, and dietitian counseling needs to be reimbursed by insurance for obesity, not just diabetes and heart disease. If you’re interested in consumer and healthcare professional insights related to GLP-1s, reach out to me or Eat Well Global, Inc - we have some exciting projects in the works and would love to work with you!

It’s no secret that GLP-1 agonist drugs are quickly reshaping the consumer landscape. However significant gaps in understanding the implications for the health and wellness industry remain. What are your biggest concerns or questions?

Did you know: ...only 20% of healthcare providers feel equipped to provide guidance on sustainable nutrition topics? Consumers already connect sustainability and nutrition and regularly turn to healthcare professionals (HCPs) for food and nutrition expertise. But, this significant gap in HCP knowledge could lead to confusion among consumers who are trying to align their dietary choices with their values of environmental sustainability. Learn more about the strategies to educate and equip HCPs with sustainable nutrition knowledge in the link in the comments.
