Patient Safety Structural Measure Domain 5: Patient & Family Engagement Our hospital incorporates patient and caregiver input about patient safety events or issues (such as patient submission of safety events, safety signals from patient complaints or other patient safety experience data, patient reports of discrimination). Our Total Systems Safety program helps healthcare providers design and build a patient reported safety outcomes process that enables safety teams to measure and act on safety concerns as patients and families identify and experience them. Patient Safety Structural Measure Domain 4: Accountability & Transparency Our hospital reports serious safety events, near misses and precursor events to a Patient Safety Organization (PSO) listed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). ECRI and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices PSO is the largest PSO, with more than 7 million patient safety events, and 5000+ root cause analysis in our database. We are a national learning system for safety with a mission of advancing evidence-based healthcare globally for the benefit of patients everywhere. Patient Safety Structural Measure Domain 3: Culture of Safety & Learning Health Systems Use human factors engineering principles in selection and design of devices, equipment, and processes. Our team of human factors engineers work with healthcare professionals to take a blended approach that considers the clinical environment and safety infrastructure using human factors engineering to transform patient safety while considering the clinician delivering the care. This is a truly a human-centered, total systems approach to safety. Learn more: https://hubs.la/Q02M5x4X0 #patientsafety #healthcaresafety #riskmanagement #safety #risk #quality

Fortune consulted ECRI’s Vice President of Device Safety for a recent article on how “Home medical devices pose risks for Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers.” “Home use devices are generally prescribed by doctors who have never been in the homes of the people who will use them. So, they don’t know if the home environment is appropriate,” said Scott Lucas, VP of Device Safety. Home medical devices — such as infusion pumps, nebulizers, CPAP machines and home dialysis machines — offer vital health assistance in a comfortable setting, but they can also present problems for users and caregivers. [INNOVATION UPDATE] Donanemab to Treat Early Alzheimer’s disease Toxic accumulations of amyloid-beta (Aβ) protein in the brain, often called plaques, are thought to be key contributors to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology. Donanemab (Kisunla) is a monoclonal antibody designed to bind to Aβ plaques and promote their clearance from the brain, thus slowing cognitive decline. Donanemab was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat patients with early symptomatic AD, including mild cognitive impairment as well as the mild dementia stage of AD, who have confirmed amyloid pathology.
