A note from our President & Founder
WARNING: Emotional Content Ahead Five Years. About half of all startups fail in the first five years. Five years ago, I sat in front of my computer announcing I’d done a thing – acted on this crazy idea that a wife and mother of two young kids (two and five at the time) could go out on her own and start something from scratch. I sat in front of my computer, waiting, twiddling my thumbs for awhile, wondering, would they follow? Would the work come? But I knew something to be true: people want to work with people, not letterheads. It’s been my motto. Provide a service and a brand around a great team of people, who are committed to each other and our clients, and committed to making projects fun, exciting and beautiful. Today marks eddy’s 5th Birthday. We are growing and busier than ever! It’s been a milestone I’ve been keenly aware of since the outset, determined to pass it. I’m so proud of our team and I am so grateful for each of them who have been just as invested and devoted to helping eddy grow up as me. It absolutely takes a village. It takes a village at the office and it takes a village at home. We have such an amazing, supportive, awesome village! I once attended a women’s leadership conference that asked the question: can women have it all? The speaker’s response was, “yes, but not all at once”. Maybe it’s not possible to have it all at once, but it’s possible to have a lot, and a village and awesome team are key. It is important to me that my team knows and sees me as both a mother and as a designer. I want to have a lot, and I want my team to have a lot too. It IS possible to be a devoted mother and a driven entrepreneur. There’s a lot on this journey that I hadn’t imagined, including having two offices in St. Louis and Seattle – but holy cow, what a fun ride! Someone sent me a quote today, “There’s a past version of you that is so proud of how far you have come.” As designers and architects, it’s easy to toot our own horns for the projects we’ve done and share the pretty pictures. But, today I’m going to take the time to celebrate having stuck my neck out and done the crazy thing and be proud of how far eddy has come - and by golly - I can’t wait to see what fun, exciting things the next five years have to bring!
