If you've kept an eye on the auto industry over the years, you've probably wondered when those low new-car sales totals from a few years ago would take their toll on the used market. Well, that time is now ⏰🚗🚨 Here’s what you need to know: 📉 2022 was one of lowest new-car sales volume years in recent memory with only 13.8M units moved (the lowest since 2011’s 12.8M sales). ↩️ Within that irregular year of declined sales, only 18% of new cars were leased. As a result, only 2 million 3-year-old off-lease vehicles will potentially return to the market in 2025 — half the typical 4 million seen in the late 2010s. ❤️🩹 3-year-old vehicles represent the heartbeat of the used market. Without substantial volume levels of this desired vehicle age, the entire used market is thrown for a loop as older-used vehicle demand, and soon pricing, will rise. The great irony is that the new-car market is looking a whole lot healthier today than it was three years ago, with replenished inventory levels and the return of discounting. That trend combined with the less appealing used vehicle mix on the horizon means we’re likely to see new-used fence sitters swayed to consider brand new vehicles more than the past few years. And as we learned a few years ago, limited supply drives opportunities for consumers to make some unexpected dough on their trade-ins. This unfolding used car environment with a shortage of newer-used inventory should be no different, especially for shoppers willing to part with those desirable 3-year-old vehicles sitting in their driveway. At BloombergNEF’s #BNEFSummit in San Francisco this week, I joined Josh D. Boone ⚡️🚙 @ VELOZ, Apoorv Bhargava @ WeaveGrid, Marcus Hays @ ORBIS ELECTRIC, and Siyi Mi to banter about the value of one of the car world’s least heralded technologies: the plug-in hybrid. As the industry grapples with shifting perception and purchase decisions around pure electrics, it’s this unsung electrification middle child that presents a short-term opportunity for both automakers and car shoppers—namely a more comfortable, less committed way to start the transition to green auto technology.  The challenge? Big ones - automaker commitment, few products, and low sales. And a serious lack of consumer education on why PHEVs make sense for many Americans today. From limited awareness (“Wait, there’s a whole segment of cars out there that can run on gas after the electric range runs dry?”) to misperceptions (“PHEV ranges aren’t substantial enough for my lifestyle”), there’s a good bit of education that needs to happen to put plug-ins on an average American’s shopping list. Our panel consensus was that the American car shopping base involves a diverse range of transportation needs. For some, home charging is not a possibility, and reliable community charging is not a reality. Rather than a one-size-fits-all solution, there’s room for a number of electrified options to cohabitate, and PHEVs should fit in more evenly among the mix. Eventually, battery tech and charging infrastructure improvements will make all-electric EVs more viable for a larger swath of the population. Until then, the focus should be on getting the average American “plugged in” to how alternative electrified transportation like PHEVs are already a good fit for their lifestyles.

As dealers and car shoppers navigate an evolving economic climate, two truths remain constant: good customer service makes a difference in the car shopping journey, and it deserves to be recognized. Today we’re excited to announce the winners of the 2025 Edmunds Five Star Dealer Awards! This year’s awards honor 107 dealers nationwide for outstanding customer satisfaction ratings, with 10 of those dealers earning the heralded Edmunds Five Star Premier Dealer designation. “The automotive market continued to normalize in 2024 after years of disruption, but affordability challenges remained a significant hurdle for many car shoppers. In this environment, consumers increasingly turned to trusted resources like Edmunds for guidance and demonstrated a stronger preference for dealerships that prioritized outstanding service and positive shopping experiences," said Seth Berkowitz, president of Edmunds. "Edmunds’ Five Star Dealer Awards honor the extraordinary efforts of dealerships across the country that go above and beyond to make customers feel comfortable, valued, and supported throughout the car-buying and ownership journey." Congratulations to the winners across the nation who go above and beyond. Check out the full list of 2025 Five Star Dealer Award winners at the link below.
