ESG connects K-12, higher education, and workforce systems to advance equitable on-ramps to economic opportunity.

About us

Education Strategy Group (ESG) is a mission-driven consulting firm that works with America’s education, business, and civic leaders to expand economic opportunity and mobility by increasing educational attainment. We are driven by the conviction that a robust education system aligned with workforce demands leads to a stronger, more equitable society. In today’s economy, success largely depends on attainment of a credential beyond high school. Education Strategy Group supports the preparation, entry, and success of individuals from K-12 through postsecondary education to build a more equitable system, open economic doors for all, and strengthen our democracy. We work with America’s education leaders and employers to design, scale, and implement strategies that improve attainment. ESG specializes in strengthening the transition points that have the highest stakes for youth and adults and the highest benefit for states, communities, and economies. We believe that success in each level of our system should be defined, in part, based on our ability to prepare young people for success at the next level.

This week, I had the pleasure of joining the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for a convening in Detroit that brought together policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to discuss promising place-based initiatives to help residents get and keep good jobs. Thanks to Brad Hershbein and my fellow panelists for the opportunity to share the work we are doing at Education Strategy Group, including our recent work in Washington State, on education to career pathway intermediaries, and our cross-jurisdictional pathways work in the greater DC region. The cost of college is an enormous barrier to many students’ postsecondary dreams. While federal financial aid will continue to be crucial, there is also a major opportunity for STATE leaders to use their own financial aid programs to expand postsecondary access and success. Because they can move more quickly and nimbly than the federal government, state leaders are uniquely positioned to develop financial aid programs that are specifically suited to their populations and workforce goals. Education Strategy Group has just published a new set of resources about how state financial aid can be a powerful lever for positive change, and my latest column in Forbes highlights some of the innovative states who are leading the way. https://lnkd.in/euDtQ8NC

Financial aid programs are pivotal in bridging the affordability gaps that are limiting access to higher education. Federal financial aid programs often provide the foundation, but states have a unique opportunity to create financial aid systems that expand postsecondary access and success within their own contexts, ultimately contributing to more equitable outcomes and a stronger, more competitive workforce. Our latest report—Aiding Attainment—explores the evolving landscape of state financial aid and offers actionable recommendations for optimizing these programs to enhance equity and success, organized around the following design principles: - Prioritize need-based aid - Simplify program requirements - Address non-tuition expenses - Incorporate flexibility and inclusivity - Support workforce development - Leverage data for continuous improvement - Enhance communications and transparency Check out the full suite of resources 👇 https://lnkd.in/eHJp9W4c

Equitable access to high-value, career connected learning has many positive benefits for students, including the ability to secure higher-paying jobs after graduation and an increased confidence that they will be successful in the job market. In fact, nearly 90% of students and families want diverse pathways toward careers. On the other side of the education-to-workforce paradigm, employers understand the need to develop their future talent pipeline and diversify their workforce and are interested in providing virtual opportunities for groups or individual learners as a first step in this direction. And yet, we have not seen a major push to strengthen the connection between our education and employer talent systems; with the exception of those states and communities that are investing in “Education-to-career pathway intermediaries.” The latest Forbes column from Matt Gandal looks at how state and local governments are leveraging these opportunities to strengthen talent pipelines, and why we should scale this model nationwide. https://lnkd.in/g2sHwTtM

Some of the most highly regarded education systems in the world feature strong and dexterous connections between schools and employers; but in the U.S., disconnection between education and employer talent systems is too often the norm. Fortunately, there are emergent bright spots in communities across the country that are bucking that status quo; and often, at the center of the change are “education-to-career pathway intermediaries” that are bringing together disparate actors from K-12 education, higher education, and industry employers around a common vision. My latest column in Forbes highlights Education Strategy Group’s latest research on intermediaries and argues that the best way to build this important muscle in America will be through public-private partnerships. With further infrastructure, investment, and support, we can realize the full potential of these organizations to help build a stronger system of educational and economic opportunity for all. https://lnkd.in/ehFbu7c8

We’re excited to be lifting up the voices of students who are well on their way to achieving their dreams by participating in accelerated pathways opportunities through the hard work and dedication of the #AccelerateED community. Last week, we introduced Qamar Ayyoubi, a rising senior at Kettering Fairmont High School in Ohio and nursing pathway student. Next up, meet Jesse Lopez, a newly-minted high school grad from a Chicago suburb, who has jump started his IT career thanks to Illinois' AMP-IT pathway opportunity: https://lnkd.in/d7FY8trG
