Lumina's Jasmine Haywood, Ph.D., pointed to three significant factors in ensuring student success in college: engagement, support, and a sense of belonging. During a recent episode of the "Office Hours" podcast, she chatted with Southern Illinois University System President Daniel Mahony about how, if students feel connected to their environments, they'll persist at a higher rate.   "Institutions that create inclusive and affirming environments will see stronger student outcomes because students feel valued and they feel capable of achieving those goals both inside and outside of the classroom," she said during the conversation with SIU Carbondale student Lidell L. At SXSW EDU earlier this month, Lumina's Courtney Brown led a discussion about the value of higher education with Kim Hunter Reed, Ph.D., Louisiana’s Commissioner of Higher Education; Gallup's Stephanie Marken; and William Serrata, El Paso Community College District president. The panel acknowledged that although confidence in higher education is slipping, most Americans still believe in its value. The challenge is showing that college is worth the cost and that credentials have value in the workforce—and it must be affordable. Our live podcast roadshow from SXSW continued today as “Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Talent” host Dakota Pawlicki led a thought-provoking conversation tackling a bold question: Can AI outpace higher education, or do colleges and universities still play a crucial role in shaping its impact? The discussion with Alisa Miller, co-founder of Pluralytics AI and chief AI officer at Aletheia Marketing & Media; John McDonald, head of strategic initiatives at Tulsa Innovation Labs; and Julie Schell, assistant vice provost of academic technology and director of the Office of Academic Technology at the The University of Texas at Austin, explored how universities must adapt to AI’s rapid evolution. The panel examined higher ed’s role in AI, including job displacement, equitable access, and rethinking the value of a degree in a world where AI can generate code, analyze data, and even conduct research.
