Happy World Engineer's Day! Today we would like to remember Hertha Marks Ayrton. She was a pioneer in electrical engineering. One of her most notable discoveries was about a common lighting issue in arc lamps. The electrical arcs tended to hiss and sputter before producing a consistent light. She discovered that this was caused by oxidation of the positive carbon electrode and suggested that changes to the shape of it would greatly decrease the length of the hissing, providing more stable light in a shorter amount of time. As the first female member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers Hertha serves as an inspiration to any woman entering an underrepresented field.
