This #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, it's important to not leave LGBTQ+ people out of the conversation. LGBTQ+ individuals face unique structural barriers to life-saving cancer care, including: ⚕️ Lack of research and affirming practices for LGBTQ+ breast/chest cancer 💼 Insurance coverage denials or lack of insurance altogether 💬 Gendered language around breast/chest cancer 🩺 Medical mistrust and fear of discrimination from providers ...and more. What can you do to support LGBTQ+ patients in cancer care? ✅ Create a safe space by using correct names, pronouns, and identities ✅ Personalize risk assessments based on anatomy, surgical history, and identity-specific risks ✅ Educate patients about their unique risks and benefits of proactive screening ✅ Collaborate on a screening plan that addresses each patient's barriers and needs 🔎 Want to learn more about supporting LGBTQ+ cancer care? We've developed LGBTQ+ cancer screening courses with Violet, a platform offering culturally competent healthcare training. Dive into the details of LGBTQ+ cervical and chest cancer screenings: https://lnkd.in/e9jvyxzf

🏳️🌈This #LGBTHistoryMonth, we're honoring LGBTQ+ trailblazers who advanced health for our communities. In the face of systemic oppression, they fought for education, legal protection, and leadership, boldly asserting their right to live and work openly as their authentic selves. Their courage paved the way for the progress we see today. But the work for health equity continues. The legacies of our queer ancestors fuel our fight to continue building a more equitable future for all.

One of the biggest concerns we hear from organizations interested in LGBTQ+ work is the fear of saying the wrong thing. But communication goes beyond the words we use—its about the framing, biases, and assumptions we may not even realize are there. It’s essential for organizations to take a step back and review communication as a whole. From your website language to survey design, every touchpoint is an opportunity to create inclusive experiences for LGBTQ+ individuals 🏳️🌈. Use these tips and download our free LGBTQ+ Inclusive Communication Checklist & Guide to evaluate and improve your communications materials! 🔗https://lnkd.in/eS_z2WEX

It’s finally happened! 🥹 Thrilled to share news of our R01 out of University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing being funded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Our team will examine the efficacy of Parents ASSIST, a family communication intervention for parents with gay sons.🏳️🌈 This idea started as an F31 dissertation eight years ago. With the nurturing support of parents and community partners, Antonia M. Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN and Jose Bauermeister, it’s going to be an exciting five-year study! Thankful to all the folks who have been part of this journey with special shout-out to my husband James Wolfe for ALL THE THINGS. ❤️
