This article highlights the crucial importance of quantifying non-revenue water losses for public utilities. Establishing a solid baseline and relevant benchmarks is essential to understanding the scale of the problem and implementing effective actions. 📊💧 I particularly appreciate the idea that goals 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐔𝐀𝐑𝐋 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐋𝐈. This allows for proactive management and better decision-making. ✅ #NRW #EllipseDigital #NRWAI
Understanding and managing Non-Revenue Water: why it’s necessary to get specific. If utilities can’t quantify the Non-Revenue Water (NRW) issue, they’re unlikely to realize the full scale of the problem or the damage it brings to their operations. Without clear data, effective intervention is nearly impossible. That’s why setting a baseline and using relevant benchmarks is the key first step in NRW management. Here’s what utilities need to do: 1️⃣ Baseline your losses today: identify exactly how much water you’re losing right now. Knowing this gives you a starting point to measure progress and justify action. 2️⃣ Set benchmarks that matter: benchmarks allow for comparison with industry standards, and internal NRW reduction targets, providing a frame of reference for setting actionable targets: 🎯 Regulatory requirements – often, regulatory bodies or government agencies set thresholds that utilities are mandated to meet. These benchmarks ensure utilities are moving toward defined standards. 🎯 Industry standards – these guidelines consider factors like available resources, expertise, and the type of supply system. In general, they can inform reasonable targets for reducing leaks. 🎯 Internal targets – For utilities facing water shortages or funding constraints, internal benchmarks can be the most practical. Targets like budget deficit reduction can be vital for each utility’s unique situation but must be set thoughtfully to be effective. The big question: 𝐴𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑡𝑠 𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ? To manage NRW effectively, utilities need to go beyond basic NRW percentage targets. These can sometimes be misleading without supporting metrics. That’s where tracking additional indicators like the Unavoidable Annual Real Losses (UARL), Infrastructure Leakage Index (ILI), and NRW volumes by zone come in. Each metric sheds light on different aspects of water loss and system health, guiding better, data-driven decisions. ✅ 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: effective tracking means breaking the network into zones and calculating these metrics regularly. Annual calculations won’t help guide daily actions or track monthly improvements. Frequent concise tracking provides the insights needed to adjust and optimize NRW management in real-time. Share the benchmarks that you’re using to tackle the NRW in your utility. #WaterManagement #NRW #Benchmarking #Sustainability #B2BTech
